Servicing Engine issues Diagnostics MOT'S Tyres Electrical
The business was founded in 1995 carrying out Independent restoration and repair of older models of Volvo cars such as the 1800S and 120 at Edolphs Farm 1995.
Before long it became abundantly clear that people wanted to repair their newer models of Volvo cars, a significant number of new customers being referrals from existing customers.
In 1997 the business moved to Charlwood Place at John Lory’s Farm where we are now. With the increase of business in newer models of Volvo cars, changes had to be made. So with the addition of added skills and equipment I took the decision to do a lot less restoration work on the older cars and concentrate on servicing and repairs, most recently updating our image to Charlwood Automotive as we decided to specialise in Minis as well as Volvo cars too.
Our staff consists of three highly trained technicians working in our well equipped workshop.

Why regular car servicing matters
Regular car servicing is essential to ensure vehicle safety, reliability, and longevity while saving money on fuel and costly repairs. It involves proactive inspections of critical components, such as brakes, fluids, and filters, to detect wear early, preventing unexpected breakdowns and maintaining optimal performance.
Key Reasons for Regular Servicing:
- Improved Safety: Regular checks ensure crucial safety components like brakes, steering, and tires are in proper working order, reducing the risk of accidents.
- Cost Savings & Longevity: Proactive maintenance prevents minor issues from becoming expensive, major repairs. A well-maintained engine lasts longer and is less prone to sudden failure.
- Better Fuel Efficiency: Replacing filters and fresh oil ensures the engine runs efficiently, improving fuel consumption and reducing costs at the pump.
- Maintained Resale Value: A full, documented service history proves to future buyers that the vehicle has been well-cared for, significantly increasing its, according to Halfords Blog.
- Lower Emissions: A properly serviced engine emits fewer pollutants, which is better for the environment.
- Reliability: It reduces the likelihood of breakdowns, providing peace of mind.
Steering and suspension checks
Steering and suspension checks involve inspecting components for wear, damage, or leaks, such as checking for play in wheels, inspecting struts for oil leakage, and testing for excessive bouncing. Key indicators of failure include uneven tire wear, clunking noises, pulling to one side, or loose handling.
Key Inspection Steps
- Visual Inspection: Check for damaged, cracked, or dry-rotted rubber boots on ball joints, tie rods, and bushings. Look for leaking fluid on shock absorbers or struts.
- Physical Inspection: Lift the vehicle, then grasp the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock to check for ball joint movement. Move to the 9 and 3 o'clock position to check for tie rod and steering rack issues, ensuring minimal play.
- Bounce Test: Apply down-ward pressure to each corner of the car; if it bounces more than twice, the shocks/struts may be worn.
- Component Check: Inspect the sway bar end links for excessive movement. Ensure all bolts are tight.
