The M6 through Gravelly Hill Interchange, the M5 and M6 meeting at Ray Hall, and the M42 past Solihull and the NEC can switch from 70mph to standstill in minutes. My car has broken down on the M6 or M5 with a gearbox fault. What should I do?
Your safety comes first. Get the car as far off the carriageway as you can, leave by the passenger side, wait behind the barrier where it is safe to do so, and call your breakdown provider. Once you are safe, ring us on 0808 164 0418 and we will talk through recovering the car for a gearbox diagnosis.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
We can give an initial idea based on your car and the symptoms, but faults that feel the same can have very different causes. The confirmed price comes after a full diagnostic, and nothing is done until you approve it.
How soon will I know what's wrong with my gearbox?
Diagnostic findings are usually ready within 2 to 3 days of collection, depending on the fault and how busy the workshop is. We will keep you posted if it is going to take longer.
Do you repair ZF automatic gearboxes?
Yes. ZF automatics are fitted to Land Rover, Range Rover, Jaguar, BMW and many other brands, and we diagnose and repair them, from valve body and solenoid faults through to full rebuilds.
Why does my DSG judder in slow traffic?
Judder when pulling away or crawling in queues is one of the most common dual-clutch complaints. It is usually linked to clutch wear, a mechatronic fault or the clutches needing adaptation. A diagnostic tells us which, so we only fix what is actually wrong.
Is it worth repairing an automatic gearbox on a high-mileage car?
Often, yes. Many faults on older automatics come down to a single component, such as a solenoid or valve body, which costs far less than a rebuild or a replacement car. We will give you an honest view once the gearbox has been diagnosed.
Will using an independent gearbox specialist affect my manufacturer's warranty?
No. We use OEM or manufacturer warranty-approved parts and carry out repairs in a way that protects your existing manufacturer's warranty.
My car has a used-car warranty. Can you deal with the provider?
Tell us at the start and we can liaise with your warranty provider and help with the claim, where your policy and the provider allow.
How long are your repairs guaranteed for?
All our gearbox repairs and rebuilds are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles, covering both parts and labour.
Should automatic transmission fluid ever be changed?
Many manufacturers describe gearbox fluid as long-life, but it still ages with heat and mileage, particularly in stop-start driving. We check the level and condition of the fluid as part of every diagnostic and will tell you if it is contributing to the problem.
Do I need to bring the car to you?
No. Subject to availability, we can collect from your home or workplace anywhere in the West Midlands and return the car once the work is done.
Will you carry out extra work without checking with me?
Never. If the diagnostic or the repair uncovers anything else, we call you, explain it and wait for your go-ahead.
