Lexus Gearbox Repair Specialists for e-CVT, CVT, Automatic and Manual Transmissions
Lexus transmissions are among the most reliable in the industry. The e-CVT hybrid system used across the IS, ES, NX, RX, UX and CT range uses a planetary gearset rather than a conventional belt and pulley, which makes it significantly more durable than belt-driven CVT units. The e-CVT has very few moving parts and failures are uncommon. When they do occur they are typically caused by inverter cooling system issues, oil pump failure or electrical faults within the transmission control module, rather than mechanical wear in the gearset itself.
Non-hybrid Lexus models including the IS 250, IS 300, RC and LC use conventional automatic gearboxes. These develop faults including delayed or rough gear changes, torque converter shudder, solenoid wear and fluid degradation. The IS 250 automatic developed a well-documented knock and judder on the overrun, caused by the direct injection engine firing timing interacting with the transmission at low speeds. On F Sport and performance models the transmission control unit can develop shift hesitation at lower speeds that does not respond to software updates alone.

At Service4Service we repair all Lexus transmission types including e-CVT hybrid, conventional automatic and manual gearboxes across all models. We use Lexus-specific diagnostic equipment to read fault codes and carry out on-site pressure tests before recommending any work. Most Lexus gearbox repairs cost significantly less than a main dealer quote and our 0% finance options mean you can spread the cost.
With over 18 years of experience and more than 20,000 repairs completed, we cover the full range of Lexus gearbox faults. From e-CVT oil pump and inverter cooling repairs to automatic solenoid replacements and full gearbox overhauls, we change all transmission fluids and filters as part of every rebuild. Lexus Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Lexus Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
e-CVT Hybrid Transmission: The Lexus e-CVT is fitted to all hybrid models including the IS300h, NX300h, RX450h, UX250h, CT200h, ES300h and GS450h. Unlike belt-driven CVTs, it uses a planetary gearset and two electric motor generators to transfer drive between the petrol engine and the wheels. There is no belt, no pulleys and no conventional clutch. The e-CVT is significantly more durable than a conventional CVT and mechanical failures are uncommon. When faults do occur they typically involve the oil pump, inverter cooling system or transmission control module faults rather than wear in the gearset itself. We use Lexus-specific diagnostic equipment to identify whether the fault is in the e-CVT unit or in a connected hybrid system component before any work is recommended.
-
Conventional Automatic Gearbox: Non-hybrid Lexus models including the IS 250, IS 300, IS 350, RC 300, RC 350, GS 300, GS 350 and LC 500 use conventional torque converter automatic gearboxes. These are generally reliable units built to a high standard but develop faults over time including delayed or rough gear changes, torque converter shudder particularly on the IS 250 under light throttle at low speeds, solenoid wear, valve body contamination and fluid degradation. Fluid condition is critical on all Lexus automatics and changes at appropriate intervals significantly reduce the risk of developing these faults.
-
Multi-Mode Automatic (F Sport): Lexus F Sport and F Performance models including the IS F, GS F and RC F use a multi-mode automatic transmission with Sport S and Sport S+ shift programmes that hold gears longer for more responsive acceleration. Common faults on F Sport automatics include shift hesitation at lower speeds that does not resolve with software updates alone, transmission control module faults and in some cases torque converter clutch wear accelerated by the sustained high-load driving these models are often used for.
-
CVT Transmission: Some earlier non-hybrid Lexus models used a conventional belt-driven CVT. These develop faults including belt wear causing slipping and surging under acceleration, overheating under sustained load and fluid degradation affecting shift quality. Regular fluid changes using Lexus-approved CVT fluid are essential to maintain reliability on these older units.
-
Manual Gearbox: Manual gearboxes have been fitted to selected Lexus IS and GS models. They are generally robust units but develop common faults including synchromesh wear causing grinding when selecting gears, oil leaks and worn linkages. Most Lexus manual gearbox faults can be repaired without a full rebuild and we carry out full rebuilds where required using OEM-approved parts only.
The Functionality of Lexus Gearboxes
-
Hybrid Power Blending: The Lexus e-CVT does not function like a conventional gearbox. It uses a power split device to blend power from the petrol engine and electric motor generators continuously, distributing drive to the wheels in whatever combination is most efficient at any given moment. At low speeds the car can run on electric power only. Under harder acceleration the engine and motors work together. During braking the motors switch to generator mode, recovering energy back into the hybrid battery. This system delivers seamless acceleration without the gear change interruption of a conventional automatic.
-
Smooth Gear Shifting: Lexus conventional automatics are tuned specifically for the brand's comfort and refinement positioning. The torque converter and shift programme are calibrated to deliver near-imperceptible gear changes during normal driving. Lexus automatics are widely regarded as among the smoothest shifting units in the premium segment. The quality of shift is directly linked to fluid condition — degraded fluid has a noticeable effect on shift smoothness before it causes more serious damage.
-
Fuel Efficiency: The Lexus e-CVT delivers real-world fuel economy benefits that few conventional automatics can match, particularly in urban driving where the electric motor handles much of the low-speed work. Lexus hybrid models consistently return strong real-world MPG figures without requiring driver input to maximise efficiency. The power split device selects the most efficient blend of engine and electric drive automatically based on speed, load and battery state.
-
Driver Control: Lexus automatic models offer Sport S and Sport S+ drive modes which adjust the shift programme and engine response for a more engaged driving experience. In Sport S+ the gearbox holds gears to the rev limiter and responds immediately to paddle inputs. On F Sport and F Performance models the transmission offers a manual mode that holds gears indefinitely until the driver selects the next ratio, giving a level of control closer to a manual gearbox without the clutch pedal.
-
Adaptive Refinement: Lexus automatics use an adaptive shift programme that learns driving patterns over time and adjusts gear selection accordingly. The transmission control unit monitors throttle history, road speed, gradient and load to build a picture of how the car is being driven and optimises shift points around it. This is one reason why Lexus automatics feel increasingly well-matched to individual drivers over time, and also why a software reset or battery disconnection can temporarily make the gearbox feel less responsive until the learning cycle completes.

Understanding your vehicle's maintenance needs, and addressing issues promptly are key to maintaining your car's performance and reliability. If you have specific questions about your vehicle or an Lexus gearbox repair issue, don't hesitate to call Service4Service on 0808 164 0418 for guidance.
What gearbox does my Lexus have and is it reliable?
Most Lexus hybrid models including the IS300h, NX300h, RX450h, UX250h, CT200h, ES300h and GS450h use an e-CVT transmission. The Lexus e-CVT uses a planetary gearset rather than a belt and pulley, which makes it significantly more durable than the belt-driven CVTs used by other manufacturers. Mechanical failures are uncommon. Non-hybrid models including the IS 250, IS 350, GS and RC use conventional torque converter automatics which are reliable but develop faults with age and mileage.
What are the signs my Lexus gearbox needs attention?
On hybrid models the main warning signs are an unusual whining or humming noise under acceleration, hybrid warning lights on the dashboard, delayed or sluggish power delivery and in some cases the hybrid system shutting itself down. On conventional automatic models the signs include delayed or rough gear changes, a shudder or vibration under light throttle at low speeds, transmission warning lights and the gearbox dropping into limp mode.
What causes the IS 250 to shudder or knock at low speeds?
The IS 250 has a documented tendency to judder or knock under light throttle at low speeds, particularly noticeable when the engine is pulling gently in a high gear. This is related to the interaction between the direct injection engine firing pattern and the torque converter clutch engagement at low load. It is not always a gearbox fault in isolation but requires a thorough diagnostic to determine whether the torque converter or transmission control settings are the primary cause.
Can a Lexus e-CVT be repaired without replacing the whole unit?
In many cases yes. The planetary gearset itself rarely fails. Faults more commonly arise in auxiliary components including the oil pump, inverter cooling system or transmission control module. We carry out a full diagnostic using Lexus-specific equipment to identify the exact fault before any parts are ordered. Nothing is started without your approval.
Do Lexus automatic gearboxes need regular fluid changes?
Yes. Lexus describes the ATF on some models as a long-life fill but most specialists recommend changing it every 40,000 to 60,000 miles. Degraded fluid causes torque converter shudder, shift quality deterioration and solenoid wear on all Lexus automatic units. A fluid service is the most cost-effective preventative maintenance you can carry out on any Lexus automatic.
Do you repair all Lexus models including F Sport and F Performance?
Yes. We repair all Lexus automatic and manual gearboxes across the full model range including IS, ES, GS, LS, NX, RX, UX, RC, LC and LX. F Sport and F Performance models including the IS F, GS F and RC F are covered. We use Lexus-specific diagnostic equipment to read all transmission fault codes and live data before recommending any work.
How much does a Lexus gearbox repair cost?
The cost depends on the model and the specific fault. An oil pump repair or fluid service costs significantly less than a full transmission rebuild. After a full diagnostic we give you a clear cost breakdown before any work begins. All our Lexus repairs are priced well below main dealer rates and we offer 0% finance to spread the cost.
How long does a Lexus gearbox repair take?
Minor repairs such as a fluid service or oil pump replacement can often be completed in one to two days. A full gearbox rebuild or unit replacement typically takes two to three days once parts have been received. We always give you a realistic time estimate before work begins.
Do Lexus gearbox repairs come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every Lexus gearbox repair and rebuild at Service4Service comes with a 12-month guarantee on parts and labour. We use OEM-approved parts only and all repairs protect your existing manufacturer's warranty. Every rebuild includes a full fluid change as standard.
Is it worth repairing a Lexus with a gearbox fault or should I sell it?
In most cases a repair is significantly cheaper than replacing the car. Lexus models hold their value well and a properly repaired transmission gives many more years of reliable service. We give you an honest assessment of the fault and the cost before any work begins so you can make the right decision.
