Honda's CVT transmission is fitted across the Civic, CR-V, Jazz, HR-V and Accord and has a well-documented history of faults. Shuddering or juddering under acceleration, slipping gears, delayed engagement when shifting from park to drive, whining or clunking noises, overheating and a flashing D indicator on the dashboard are all signs the transmission needs attention. CVT belt and pulley wear, solenoid failure and valve body faults are the most common failure points, typically showing between 80,000 and 120,000 kilometres on CVT-equipped models.
Honda's i-SHIFT semi-automatic gearbox, fitted to the Civic and Jazz, is particularly prone to clutch actuator failure. A flashing N in the gear indicator, the i-SHIFT warning light staying on, the gearbox dropping out of gear while driving or the car refusing to start are all signs of actuator failure. Unlike main dealers who order expensive new actuator units, we test and rebuild Honda clutch actuators directly, returning your unit within two to three days at a fraction of the replacement cost.
At Service4Service we repair all Honda transmission types including CVT, i-SHIFT, traditional automatic and manual gearboxes across all models. Honda automatic gearboxes fitted to the CR-V, Accord, Legend and FR-V including the 5-speed automatic, 9-speed ZF unit and hybrid transmission develop their own common faults. Delayed engagement, transmission slippage, harsh or erratic shifting, solenoid failure, valve body faults and torque converter issues are all faults we diagnose and repair regularly. We use Honda-specific diagnostic equipment to read fault codes and carry out on-site pressure tests before any work is recommended. Most Honda gearbox repairs cost significantly less than a main dealer quote and our 0% finance options mean you can spread the cost.
With over 18 years of experience and more than 20,000 repairs completed, we cover the full range of Honda gearbox faults. We change all transmission fluids and filters as part of every rebuild using Honda-approved fluid only. Using the correct Honda CVT fluid is essential degraded or incorrect fluid is one of the leading causes of CVT failure on the Civic, CR-V and Jazz.

Honda Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Honda Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
CVT Transmission: Honda's CVT is fitted across the Civic, Jazz, HR-V and earlier CR-V models. It uses a steel push belt running between two variable-diameter pulleys to deliver smooth, stepless acceleration without fixed gear changes. Honda CVTs are sensitive to fluid condition and commonly develop shuddering under acceleration, slipping, delayed engagement, whining noises and in some cases complete loss of drive. Belt and pulley wear and solenoid failure are the most common failure points. Honda issued a recall of over 140,000 Civic and Fit vehicles in 2015 for a CVT fault that could cause sudden loss of power.
-
i-SHIFT Semi-Automatic: The Honda i-SHIFT is a single-clutch automated manual gearbox fitted to the Civic and Jazz. It removes the clutch pedal by using an electro-hydraulic clutch actuator to manage gear changes automatically. The actuator is the primary failure point on the i-SHIFT. Symptoms of actuator failure include a flashing N in the gear position display, the i-SHIFT warning light staying on, the gearbox dropping out of gear while driving and in severe cases the car refusing to start. We rebuild Honda i-SHIFT clutch actuators in-house, avoiding the high cost of a new main dealer unit.
-
5-Speed Automatic: The Honda 5-speed torque converter automatic is fitted to older Civic, Accord, CR-V and FR-V models and is one of the more robust automatic units Honda has produced. Common faults that develop with age and mileage include solenoid wear causing delayed or erratic shifts, valve body faults, torque converter shudder and transmission fluid leaks. Most 5-speed automatic faults can be addressed with a targeted repair rather than a full rebuild.
-
9-Speed ZF Automatic: Newer Honda CR-V models are fitted with a 9-speed ZF automatic transmission. Early versions of this unit had well-documented harsh and hesitant shifting issues, some of which were partially addressed by software updates. Physical faults include solenoid failure, valve body issues, harsh gear changes that software alone cannot resolve and transmission control module faults. We use Honda-specific diagnostic equipment to read fault codes and confirm whether a software update or physical repair is needed before any parts are ordered.
-
Manual Gearbox: Honda manual gearboxes are fitted across the full range from the Jazz and Civic to the CR-V and Accord. They are generally reliable but common faults include synchromesh wear causing grinding on gear changes, difficulty engaging gears, oil leaks and worn linkages. Most Honda manual gearbox faults can be repaired without a full replacement. We carry out full rebuilds where required using OEM-approved parts only and include a fluid change as standard on every rebuild.
The Functionality of Honda Gearboxes
-
Smooth Gear Shifting: Honda's CVT uses a steel push belt and variable-diameter pulleys to deliver smooth, seamless acceleration without the interruption of fixed gear changes. When maintained correctly with Honda-approved CVT fluid, it is one of the smoothest transmission experiences in its class. Honda's 5-speed and 9-speed automatic units use a conventional torque converter with advanced electronic shift control to keep gear changes smooth and well-timed across all driving conditions.
-
Fuel Efficiency: Honda transmissions are built with fuel economy as a core priority. The CVT keeps the engine in its most efficient power band by adjusting the drive ratio continuously to match speed and load. The 9-speed ZF automatic fitted to the CR-V increases efficiency over the older 5-speed unit by spreading the gear ratios more widely, allowing the engine to run at lower revs during cruising. Honda hybrid models take this further by seamlessly switching between electric and petrol drive to minimise fuel use.
-
Adaptive Performance: Honda's Earth Dreams transmission technology, used across the Civic and CR-V range, adapts shift patterns to throttle input, vehicle speed and load in real time. In normal driving it prioritises smooth, efficient shifts. In Sport mode it holds gears longer and responds more quickly to throttle inputs. Honda hybrid transmissions add a further layer of adaptation by automatically balancing electric motor and engine output based on battery charge and driving demand.
-
Driver Control: Honda's automatic and CVT transmissions offer manual gear selection via paddle shifters or the gear lever on models including the Civic Type R, Accord and CR-V. The CVT in manual step mode simulates fixed gear ratios for a more traditional automatic feel when the driver wants more control. The 9-speed ZF automatic on the CR-V offers full sequential manual control via the steering wheel paddles, giving responsive gear selection without giving up the convenience of full automatic operation.
-
Rapid Response: The Honda i-SHIFT semi-automatic gearbox delivers faster gear changes than a conventional manual by using an electro-hydraulic clutch actuator to manage clutch engagement automatically. The dual-motor hybrid transmission found in models like the Jazz and CR-V e:HEV uses an electric motor to deliver instant torque response at low speeds, removing the delay that characterises conventional automatic gear changes and giving a more immediate accelerative feel in everyday driving.

What are the signs my Honda automatic gearbox needs attention?
The most common warning signs on Honda automatics are a delay when selecting drive or reverse, the gearbox slipping between gears, harsh or jerky shifts that feel out of character, a whining or buzzing noise at motorway speed, transmission fluid leaking underneath the car, the check engine light or a flashing D on the dashboard. Honda automatics are generally robust but when faults develop they can worsen quickly if ignored. A diagnostic should be booked as soon as any of these symptoms appear.
What automatic gearboxes does Honda use and what goes wrong with them?
Honda has used several automatic transmission types across their range. The 5-speed automatic is fitted to older Civic, Accord and CR-V models and is a reliable unit but prone to solenoid wear and valve body faults with age. The 9-speed ZF automatic fitted to newer CR-V models can develop harsh or hesitant shifting, particularly in the early units. Honda hybrid models use an integrated electric motor and gearbox system that can develop its own faults around the transmission control unit and motor coupling. We diagnose and repair all of these.
Why is my Honda CR-V automatic gearbox harsh or hesitant when changing gear?
Harsh or hesitant shifting on the Honda CR-V automatic is most commonly caused by a faulty transmission control module, worn solenoids, valve body issues or degraded transmission fluid. The 9-speed ZF unit fitted to newer CR-V models had well-documented shifting issues in early production, some of which were addressed by software updates. If a software update has not resolved the fault, physical repair is needed. We carry out a full diagnostic to identify exactly what is causing the problem before any work is recommended.
Can a Honda automatic gearbox be repaired or does it need replacing?
In the majority of cases a Honda automatic can be repaired without full replacement. Solenoid replacement, valve body repair, torque converter work and fluid and filter changes resolve most faults. A full rebuild is only recommended when internal damage is too extensive for targeted repair. We always carry out a full diagnostic first and give you a detailed cost breakdown before any work begins. Nothing is started without your approval.
What Honda automatic transmission fluid should I use?
Honda automatics require Honda ATF DW-1 fluid. Using the wrong fluid or allowing the fluid to degrade is one of the most common causes of solenoid failure, harsh shifting and internal damage on Honda automatic gearboxes. Healthy Honda ATF DW-1 is a reddish colour. If the fluid is dark, burnt-smelling or milky it needs changing immediately. Honda CVTs require a separate Honda-approved CVT fluid and the two should never be mixed.
How often should I service my Honda automatic gearbox?
Honda describes the ATF DW-1 as a long-life fluid on some models, but most independent specialists recommend changing it every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to maintain shift quality and prevent premature wear. This is particularly important on the 9-speed ZF units fitted to newer CR-V models, where fluid condition has a direct impact on shift quality and solenoid life.
How much does a Honda automatic gearbox repair cost?
The cost depends on the specific fault and the transmission type. A solenoid replacement or fluid service will cost considerably less than a valve body repair or full rebuild. After a full diagnostic we provide a detailed cost breakdown before any work is started. All our Honda gearbox repairs are priced well below main dealer rates and we offer 0% finance to help spread the cost.
How long does a Honda automatic gearbox repair take?
Straightforward repairs such as a fluid service or solenoid replacement can often be completed in one to two days. A full gearbox rebuild or clutch actuator rebuild typically takes two to three working days once parts have been received. We always give you a realistic time estimate before work begins and keep you updated throughout.
Is it worth repairing a Honda automatic gearbox or should I replace the car?
For most Honda models a repair is considerably cheaper than replacing the car. Honda automatics are generally well-built and a repaired or rebuilt unit can give many more years of reliable service. We give you an honest assessment of the fault and the cost before any work begins so you can make the right decision for your situation. We never recommend a repair that is not cost-effective for the vehicle.
