Renault Gearbox Repair Specialists for EDC Automatic, CVT, Manual and Automatic Transmissions
Renault's EDC dual-clutch automatic is fitted across the Clio, Megane, Captur and Kadjar and is one of the most frequently reported gearbox faults we diagnose. The EDC uses two clutches and a complex mechatronic system to deliver fast, smooth gear changes. When the fluid is clean and the clutch packs are in good condition it works well, but missed oil changes and stop-start urban driving accelerate clutch wear and mechatronic valve contamination. Common faults include shuddering when pulling away, a check auto gearbox warning, the EDC refusing to select gears, jerky low-speed shifts and complete loss of drive where only certain gears engage. The Captur forum has extensive documentation of the EDC entering emergency mode where only one set of clutch gears engages.
Renault's older DP0 4-speed torque converter automatic, found in the Clio, Scenic and Megane, is known for harsh gear changes with a loud bang between shifts, caused by faulty pressure modulation valves and clutch pack wear. The DP0 also develops limp mode triggered by low fluid pressure, where the gearbox locks into third gear. Older Renault CVT units from the Jatco supplier are known for whining noises under acceleration and shaking. All of these faults can be diagnosed and repaired without a full gearbox replacement in most cases.

Renault Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Renault Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
EDC Dual-Clutch Automatic: The Renault EDC is a dual-clutch automatic fitted to the Clio, Megane, Captur, Kadjar and Clio RS. It uses two separate clutches on two drive shafts — odd gears on one shaft, even gears on the other — and a mechatronic unit to control clutch engagement and gear selection. Common faults include shuddering when pulling away, a check auto gearbox warning, the gearbox entering emergency mode where only even or odd gears engage, jerky low-speed shifts and in severe cases complete loss of drive. Clutch actuator failure, position sensor faults, valve contamination from degraded oil and mechatronic unit failure are the primary causes. EDC oil should be changed every 40,000 miles to prevent accelerated wear.
-
DP0 Torque Converter Automatic: The DP0 is a 4-speed torque converter automatic fitted to older Renault Clio, Scenic and Megane models. It is known for harsh gear changes between 1st and 2nd gear with a loud banging or clunking sensation, caused by faulty pressure modulation valves and clutch pack wear. The DP0 also commonly develops limp mode triggered by low fluid pressure, where the gearbox locks into third gear and a gearbox warning light appears. Pressure valve replacement and a fluid and filter service resolve most DP0 faults without a full rebuild.
-
CVT Transmission: Some Renault models use a Jatco-supplied CVT automatic transmission. These units develop a characteristic whining or rattling noise under acceleration, often accompanied by shaking. The noise is caused by wear in the pulley and belt system combined with fluid degradation. CVT shaking can also occur and is commonly caused by incorrect or degraded fluid. Regular fluid changes using the correct CVT fluid specification significantly extend the life of Jatco CVT units on Renault models.
-
Traditional Automatic: Larger Renault models including the Koleos, Espace and Laguna used conventional 6-speed torque converter automatics. These develop faults including delayed engagement, slipping gears, rough shifts, solenoid wear and fluid leaks. Full diagnostics confirm whether a targeted repair or full rebuild is the most appropriate approach. Most conventional automatic faults on Renault models can be resolved without a full gearbox replacement.
-
Manual Gearbox: Renault manual gearboxes are fitted across the full range from the Clio and Megane to the Trafic and Master van. Common faults include synchromesh wear causing grinding when selecting gears, difficulty engaging first or reverse, oil leaks from worn seals and worn or damaged selector cables. Most Renault manual gearbox faults can be repaired without a full replacement and we carry out full rebuilds where required using OEM-approved parts only.
The Functionality of Renault Gearboxes
-
Rapid Gear Changes: Renault's EDC dual-clutch transmission delivers fast, near-seamless gear changes by using two clutches to pre-select the next gear before the current one is released. This means there is no interruption in power delivery during gear changes, giving the Clio and Megane a responsive and efficient driving experience. When the clutch packs and mechatronic unit are in good condition the EDC is one of the smoothest small-car automatics available.
-
Fuel Efficiency: The EDC's dual-clutch design eliminates the power losses associated with a traditional torque converter by using direct clutch engagement at all times. This means more of the engine's power reaches the wheels, particularly during acceleration and at motorway speeds. The EDC also selects higher gears earlier than a conventional automatic, keeping the engine at lower revs during cruising and reducing fuel consumption across the Clio, Megane and Captur range.
-
Smooth Operation: Renault's DP0 torque converter automatic in older models provides smooth, progressive gear changes when the fluid is clean and the pressure valves are functioning correctly. The torque converter absorbs drivetrain shock at low speeds, giving a more cushioned pull-away than the EDC in urban driving. The DP0 is at its best on longer journeys where the benefits of its wide ratio spread become apparent.
-
Driver Control: Renault EDC models offer a manual shift mode via the gear lever or steering wheel paddles, allowing the driver to select gears directly. On RS Sport versions the EDC shift programme is tuned for performance, holding gears longer and responding more quickly to paddle inputs. In standard mode the EDC manages gear selection automatically based on throttle input, vehicle speed and engine load.
-
Adaptive Performance: Renault automatics adapt shift patterns to driving conditions. In Eco mode the EDC upshifts early and reduces throttle sensitivity to minimise fuel consumption. In Sport mode it holds gears longer for more responsive acceleration. The transmission control unit monitors driving style over time and can adjust shift points accordingly, making the EDC feel increasingly well-matched to how each driver uses the car.

Renault Gearbox Repair FAQs
Understanding your vehicle's maintenance needs, and addressing issues promptly are key to maintaining your car's performance and reliability. If you have specific questions about your vehicle or an Renault gearbox repair issue, don't hesitate to call Service4Service on 0808 164 0418 for guidance.
What is the Renault EDC gearbox and what are the most common problems?
The Renault EDC is a dual-clutch automatic fitted to the Clio, Megane, Captur and Kadjar. It uses two separate clutches on two drive shafts and a mechatronic unit to control gear selection. Common faults include shuddering when pulling away, the check auto gearbox warning appearing, the gearbox entering emergency mode where only even or odd gears engage, jerky low-speed shifts and complete loss of drive. Clutch actuator failure and valve contamination from degraded oil are the primary causes.
What does check auto gearbox mean on my Renault?
It means the transmission control system has logged a fault code. On EDC models this commonly indicates a clutch actuator fault, a position sensor error or a mechatronic valve issue. On older DP0 models it typically signals a fluid pressure fault or solenoid failure. The car should be diagnosed as soon as possible as continuing to drive risks turning a manageable fault into a full gearbox failure.
My Renault Captur EDC is only selecting even gears. What is wrong?
This is the EDC entering emergency mode. The EDC uses one clutch for odd gears and one for even gears. When one clutch actuator fails or a position sensor logs a fault the gearbox locks to one set of gears only. The car can still be driven carefully in emergency mode but should not be driven hard. Contact us for a full diagnostic to confirm whether a clutch actuator replacement or sensor repair is needed.
How often should the Renault EDC gearbox oil be changed?
Renault recommends changing the EDC oil every 40,000 miles or 4 years. Many owners miss this service because it is not always included in a standard Renault service schedule. Degraded EDC oil is one of the primary causes of clutch wear, valve contamination and shuddering on Clio, Megane and Captur models. If you have never had the EDC oil changed we recommend booking a service as soon as possible regardless of mileage.
Can the Renault EDC gearbox be repaired or does it need replacing?
In most cases it can be repaired without a full replacement. Clutch pack replacement, mechatronic valve cleaning, solenoid replacement and a full fluid service resolve the majority of EDC faults. We carry out a full diagnostic before recommending any work. Nothing is started without your approval and all repairs come with a 12-month guarantee.
What is the Renault DP0 gearbox and why does it bang between gears?
The DP0 is a 4-speed torque converter automatic fitted to older Clio, Scenic and Megane models. It is notorious for a harsh bang or clunk between first and second gear caused by faulty pressure modulation valves and clutch pack wear. It also develops limp mode where the gearbox locks into third gear and a warning light appears. Pressure valve replacement and a fluid service resolve most DP0 faults.
Do you repair Renault van gearboxes including Trafic and Master?
How much does a Renault gearbox repair cost?
The cost depends on the fault and transmission type. A clutch pack replacement or valve service costs considerably less than a full rebuild or replacement unit. After a full diagnostic we give you a clear cost breakdown before any work begins. All our Renault gearbox repairs are priced well below main dealer rates and we offer 0% finance to spread the cost.
How long does a Renault gearbox repair take?
An EDC clutch pack replacement or fluid service can often be completed in one to two days. A full gearbox rebuild typically takes two to three days once parts have been received. We always give you a realistic time estimate before work begins.
Do Renault gearbox repairs come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every Renault gearbox repair and rebuild at Service4Service comes with a 12-month guarantee on parts and labour. We use OEM-approved parts only and all repairs protect your existing manufacturer's warranty. Every rebuild includes a full fluid and filter change as standard.
