Peugeot Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Peugeot Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
EAT8 Automatic: The Peugeot EAT8 is an 8-speed torque converter automatic built by Aisin and fitted to the 308, 3008, 5008 and 508 from 2018 onwards including e-HYBRID plug-in variants. It is a refined and capable unit when maintained correctly but develops faults including a surge or hesitation between first and second gear, torque converter shudder, valve spool deposits causing erratic shifts and fluid degradation reducing shift quality. A full fluid and filter service is the most cost-effective first step and resolves many EAT8 shift complaints before more expensive repairs are needed.
-
EAT6 Automatic: The Peugeot EAT6 is a 6-speed torque converter automatic also built by Aisin, fitted to older 308, 3008 and Partner models. The same fault patterns apply as the EAT8 — first to second gear hesitation, torque converter shudder and fluid degradation. The EAT6 is a solid unit when serviced correctly but develops shift quality issues as mileage increases and the fluid is not changed on schedule. Valve body solenoid cleaning and a fluid service resolve most EAT6 complaints without a full rebuild.
-
ETG Automated Manual: The Peugeot ETG is a single-clutch automated manual gearbox also known as the EGS or SensoDrive in earlier applications. Fitted to the 208, 2008 and older 308 before being discontinued in 2016, it replaces the clutch pedal with an electro-hydraulic actuator. The characteristic jerk between gear changes is inherent to the single-clutch design and is most pronounced in stop-start traffic. Clutch actuator failure, sensor faults and clutch wear are the most common repair jobs. Actuator replacement is in most cases all that is needed and costs significantly less than replacing the whole gearbox.
-
Traditional Automatic: Older Peugeot models including the 407, 607 and early 508 used conventional 4-speed and 6-speed torque converter automatics. These are generally more robust than the later ETG units and develop faults with age and mileage including delayed engagement, slipping gears, rough shifts, solenoid wear and transmission fluid leaks. Full diagnostics confirm whether a targeted repair or full rebuild is the most cost-effective approach.
-
Manual Gearbox: Peugeot manual gearboxes are fitted across the full range from the 107 and 208 to the Expert and Boxer van. They are generally reliable but common faults include synchromesh wear causing grinding on gear changes, difficulty selecting gears, oil leaks and worn linkages. Most Peugeot manual gearbox faults can be repaired without a full replacement and we carry out full rebuilds where required using OEM-approved parts only.
The Functionality of Peugeot Gearboxes
-
Smooth Gear Shifting: Peugeot's EAT6 and EAT8 automatic transmissions use a torque converter and planetary gear sets to deliver smooth, progressive gear changes that suit the brand's comfort-focused character. The EAT8's eight-speed ratio spread allows earlier upshifts at lower revs, keeping the engine quiet and the driving experience relaxed. When maintained with regular fluid changes, the EAT units deliver smooth and consistent gear changes across all driving conditions.
-
Fuel Efficiency: The EAT8 fitted to the 308, 3008 and 508 is tuned to prioritise fuel economy by selecting higher gears as early as possible and using torque converter lock-up to reduce slip at cruising speeds. Peugeot's e-HYBRID plug-in hybrid models combine the EAT8 with an electric motor, allowing electric-only driving at lower speeds and cutting fuel consumption significantly in urban conditions. The ETG's single-clutch design also delivered improved fuel economy over a traditional automatic by eliminating torque converter losses.
-
Adaptive Performance: Peugeot EAT transmissions adapt shift patterns to driving conditions automatically. In normal driving the gearbox prioritises smooth, economical gear changes. In Sport mode it holds gears longer and responds more quickly to throttle input for a more engaged feel. On motorways it uses its full ratio spread to keep the engine running at low revs for a quieter, more comfortable experience. The transmission control unit monitors throttle position, vehicle speed and road gradient to select the most appropriate gear at all times.
-
Driver Control: Peugeot EAT6 and EAT8 models offer manual gear selection via the gear lever, giving drivers more control when descending steep hills, towing or wanting a more responsive drive. The ETG automated manual allows drivers to change gears manually via the lever or steering wheel paddles while the gearbox manages clutch engagement automatically, removing the need for a clutch pedal while retaining a traditional gear-change feel. This appeals to drivers who prefer manual control without the effort of operating a clutch in heavy traffic.
-
Comfort-First Design: Like Citroen, Peugeot deliberately calibrates its EAT automatics for smoothness and comfort rather than outright shift speed. This suits the brand's positioning around refined, relaxed driving and is particularly effective in models like the 508 and 5008 where ride quality and refinement are priorities. The trade-off is a tendency to hesitate slightly under hard acceleration as the gearbox catches up with sudden throttle demand, which is one of the reasons the valve body and fluid condition have such an effect on perceived shift quality.

Why does my Peugeot jerk when changing gear?
Jerking during gear changes on a Peugeot is most commonly caused by the ETG automated manual gearbox. The ETG uses a single dry clutch rather than a torque converter, which means gear changes are never as smooth as a conventional automatic. When the clutch actuator begins to wear or fail, the jerk gets significantly worse. On EAT6 and EAT8 automatic models, jerking or shuddering is usually caused by torque converter issues or degraded transmission fluid rather than a mechanical fault. The two feel different ETG jerk is sharp and immediate, EAT shudder is more of a vibration under light throttle.
My Peugeot 208 ETG hesitates badly in traffic. What is causing it?
Stop-start urban driving is the worst condition for the Peugeot ETG. The single dry clutch generates heat during repeated low-speed engagement, accelerating wear on the actuator and clutch surfaces. A heavily hesitating ETG in traffic is a sign the clutch actuator is struggling to control clutch engagement precisely. The longer this is left the more the clutch surfaces wear, turning what could be an actuator replacement into a full clutch and actuator job. Book a diagnostic as soon as possible.
Can I drive my Peugeot with a gearbox warning light on?
Not advisable. A gearbox warning light on a Peugeot indicates the transmission control system has logged a fault. On ETG models this often means the gearbox is about to stop selecting gears. On EAT models it usually signals a solenoid or pressure fault. Either way continuing to drive risks turning a recoverable fault into significant internal damage. Contact us before driving any further and we can advise whether the car is safe to move.
What is the Peugeot e-HYBRID gearbox and does it have its own faults?
Peugeot e-HYBRID models including the 308 e-HYBRID and 3008 e-HYBRID use the EAT8 automatic combined with an electric motor mounted between the gearbox and engine. The electric motor allows electric-only driving at lower speeds and acts as a generator during deceleration. Faults specific to the e-HYBRID include electric motor coupling issues, TCU conflicts between the combustion and electric drive systems and EAT8 faults that are more complex to diagnose because the hybrid system masks some traditional symptoms. We have experience with Peugeot e-HYBRID transmission faults and use the correct diagnostic equipment to separate hybrid system faults from transmission faults.
How often should I service my Peugeot EAT automatic gearbox?
Peugeot does not always specify a mandatory EAT fluid change interval, but most specialists recommend changing the fluid every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Degraded ATF fluid is one of the most common causes of valve spool deposits, shift hesitation and torque converter shudder on EAT6 and EAT8 units. If you have bought a used Peugeot with no transmission service history, a fluid and filter change should be the first thing done regardless of mileage.
My Peugeot 3008 EAT8 hesitates between first and second gear. Is this normal?
It is common but it is not normal. A brief hesitation or surge between first and second gear on the Peugeot EAT8 is the most frequently reported fault on this unit. In mild cases a full fluid and filter service resolves it. In more established cases the valve body solenoids need cleaning or replacing due to wear particle contamination in the fluid. We carry out a full diagnostic to identify exactly which solenoids are affected and quote for the specific repair rather than recommending a blanket rebuild.
Do you repair Peugeot vans and commercial vehicle gearboxes?
Yes. We repair gearboxes on all Peugeot commercial vehicles including the Partner, Expert, Traveller and Boxer. The Partner uses the same EAT6 and ETG units as the passenger car range and develops the same faults. The Expert and Traveller use the EAT8 on newer models. The Boxer uses a 6-speed manual as standard with some variants using a robotised automated manual. We cover all of these including full manual gearbox rebuilds on Boxer models.
What is the lifespan of a Peugeot ETG gearbox?
The ETG itself is not a weak unit the gearbox internals are conventional manual gearbox components that last well. The weak point is the clutch actuator and the clutch itself. With careful driving the clutch can last 60,000 to 80,000 miles, though drivers who spend a lot of time in stop-start urban traffic often see clutch wear develop earlier. After clutch and actuator replacement the ETG gearbox itself can continue for many more years.
Will Peugeot cover my gearbox repair under warranty?
If your Peugeot is within the manufacturer's warranty period or an extended warranty, Peugeot or your warranty provider may cover the repair cost. We handle warranty claims on your behalf and work directly with all major warranty companies. If you are unsure whether your fault is covered, contact us and we can advise based on the fault type and your policy. We carry out all repairs using OEM-approved parts which satisfies warranty company requirements.
Main dealer quotes for Peugeot ETG and EAT gearbox repairs are frequently higher than they need to be because dealers often quote for full gearbox replacement when a targeted repair is all that is needed. An ETG clutch actuator replacement, for example, is a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole unit. We recommend getting a specialist diagnostic before committing to any dealer quote. In most cases we can carry out the same repair at a significantly lower cost and back it with a 12-month guarantee.
