Citroen Gearbox Repair Specialists for EAT8, EAT6, ETG, Automatic and Manual Transmissions
Citroen's ETG automated manual gearbox, fitted to the C3, C4 and C4 Cactus before being discontinued in 2016, is one of the most complained-about transmissions we see. It uses a single automated clutch instead of a torque converter, which causes a pronounced jerk and hesitation between gear changes, particularly at low speed. Clutch actuator failure, sensor faults and clutch wear are the primary repair jobs on ETG-equipped models. If your Citroen has an ETG and is jerking, hesitating or refusing to select gears, the clutch actuator is the first thing to check.
Citroen's EAT6 and EAT8 automatic gearboxes, built by Aisin and used across the C3 Aircross, C4, C4 Picasso, C5 Aircross and Grand C4 SpaceTourer, are generally more reliable than the ETG but develop their own faults. A brief pause or surge between first and second gear, torque converter shudder in stop-start traffic, valve spool deposits causing erratic shifts and fluid degradation reducing overall shift quality are the most reported faults on EAT6 and EAT8 units.

At Service4Service we repair all Citroen transmission types including EAT8, EAT6, ETG, traditional automatic and manual gearboxes across all models. We use Citroen-specific diagnostic equipment to read fault codes and carry out on-site pressure tests before recommending any work. Most Citroen EAT and ETG gearbox repairs cost significantly less than a main dealer quote and our 0% finance options mean you can spread the cost.
With over 18 years of experience and more than 20,000 repairs completed, we cover the full range of Citroen gearbox faults. From ETG clutch actuator replacements and EAT valve body repairs to torque converter work and full manual gearbox rebuilds, we change all transmission fluids and filters as part of every rebuild. All repairs come with a 12-month guarantee and we offer nationwide vehicle recovery and collection.

Citroen Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Citroen Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
EAT8 Automatic: The Citroen EAT8 is an 8-speed torque converter automatic built by Aisin and fitted to the C5 Aircross, C4, Grand C4 SpaceTourer and newer C3 Aircross models including plug-in hybrid variants. It is the more refined of the two EAT units and generally reliable, but develops faults including a surge or hesitation between first and second gear, torque converter shudder in stop-start conditions, valve spool deposits causing erratic shifts and fluid degradation. A full fluid and filter change resolves many EAT8 shift quality complaints and is the most cost-effective first step.
-
EAT6 Automatic: The Citroen EAT6 is a 6-speed torque converter automatic also built by Aisin, fitted to older C3 Aircross, C4 Cactus and C4 Picasso models from the mid-2010s. The same fault patterns apply as the EAT8 — first to second gear hesitation, torque converter shudder, solenoid wear and fluid degradation. The EAT6 is generally a sound unit when maintained correctly but has a tendency to develop shift quality issues as mileage increases and fluid is not changed.
-
ETG Automated Manual: The Citroen ETG is an automated single-clutch manual gearbox fitted to the C3, C4 and C4 Cactus before being discontinued in 2016. It is also known as the EGS or SensoDrive on older models. The ETG removes the clutch pedal by using an electro-hydraulic actuator to manage clutch engagement, but the single-clutch design means gear changes are notably jerky compared to a conventional automatic, particularly at low speed. Clutch actuator failure, sensor faults and clutch wear are the most common repair jobs and the reason the ETG developed a poor reputation among Citroen owners.
-
Traditional Automatic: Older Citroen models including the C5, C8 and earlier C4 Picasso used a conventional 4-speed or 6-speed torque converter automatic. These are generally robust units but develop faults with age and mileage including delayed engagement, slipping gears, rough shifts, solenoid wear and transmission fluid leaks. Full diagnostics identify whether a targeted repair or full rebuild is the most cost-effective approach.
-
Manual Gearbox: Citroen manual gearboxes are fitted across the full range from the C1 and C3 to the Berlingo and Dispatch. They are generally reliable but common faults include synchromesh wear causing grinding on gear changes, difficulty selecting gears, oil leaks and worn linkages. Most Citroen manual gearbox faults can be repaired without a full replacement and we carry out full rebuilds where required using OEM-approved parts only.
The Functionality of Citroen Gearboxes
-
Smooth Gear Shifting: Citroen's EAT6 and EAT8 automatics use a torque converter and planetary gear sets to deliver smooth, progressive gear changes suited to Citroen's comfort-focused driving philosophy. The EAT8's wider spread of eight ratios allows for earlier upshifts at lower revs, keeping the powertrain quiet and refined during normal driving. When maintained with regular fluid changes, the EAT units deliver some of the smoothest automatic gearbox changes in the mainstream market.
-
Fuel Efficiency: The EAT8 automatic fitted to the C5 Aircross, C4 and Grand C4 SpaceTourer is designed to maximise fuel economy by selecting higher gears earlier and using torque converter lock-up to reduce slip at cruising speeds. Citroen's plug-in hybrid models combine the EAT8 with an electric motor, allowing the car to run on electric drive alone at lower speeds and further reducing fuel consumption in urban driving.
-
Adaptive Performance: Citroen's EAT transmissions adapt shift patterns to driving style and conditions automatically. In normal driving the gearbox prioritises smooth, economical upshifts. In Sport mode it holds gears longer and responds more quickly to throttle input for a more engaged feel. On motorways the transmission uses its wide ratio spread to keep the engine running at low revs for a quieter, more comfortable cruising experience.
-
Driver Control: Citroen EAT6 and EAT8 models offer manual gear selection via the gear lever, allowing drivers to hold gears when descending hills or towing. The ETG automated manual takes a different approach it removes the clutch pedal entirely while retaining a traditional gear lever, giving drivers the feeling of manual gear selection without the physical effort of operating a clutch. This makes it popular with urban drivers who want control without the strain of stop-start manual driving.
-
Comfort-First Design: Unlike many manufacturers who tune their automatics for sportier, sharper shifts, Citroen deliberately calibrates the EAT units for smoothness and comfort above all else. This suits the brand's positioning around ride comfort and relaxed driving, making the EAT6 and EAT8 a good match for the C4, C5 Aircross and SpaceTourer. The trade-off is a slight tendency to hesitate under hard acceleration as the gearbox catches up with the driver's demand.

Citroen Gearbox Repair FAQs
Understanding your vehicle's maintenance needs, and addressing issues promptly are key to maintaining your car's performance and reliability. If you have specific questions about your vehicle or an Citroen gearbox repair issue, don't hesitate to call Service4Service on 0808 164 0418 for guidance.
What are the signs my Citroen gearbox needs repairing?
The most common signs are jerking or hesitation when pulling away, a delay between gear changes, slipping gears, rough or erratic shifts, a whining or clunking noise, transmission fluid leaking under the car or a gearbox warning light on the dashboard. On ETG-equipped models the jerking is most noticeable at low speeds in town. On EAT6 and EAT8 automatics the fault more often shows as a hesitation or shudder in stop-start conditions. Either way, getting a diagnostic done early keeps the repair cost down.
What should I do if my Citroen ETG is jerking badly?
Book a diagnostic as soon as possible. The ETG jerk is caused by clutch actuator wear or failure and will not improve on its own. Continuing to drive with a failing ETG actuator risks the gearbox refusing to select gears altogether. Call us on 0808 164 0418 and we can talk through the symptoms, give you an estimate and arrange collection if the car is not safe to drive.
What is the difference between the Citroen ETG and EAT gearbox?
The ETG is an automated manual gearbox it has a traditional manual gearbox with an automated clutch actuator replacing the clutch pedal. It delivers gear changes electronically but uses a single dry clutch, which causes the jerky hesitation ETG owners experience. The EAT6 and EAT8 are proper torque converter automatics, smoother and more refined than the ETG. The EAT was introduced to replace the ETG following widespread complaints about the older unit.
Can a Citroen ETG clutch actuator be repaired or does it need replacing?
In most cases the actuator can be replaced directly rather than rebuilding the whole gearbox. This is a targeted repair that costs significantly less than a full unit replacement. We carry out a full diagnostic first to confirm the actuator is the fault before any parts are ordered. Nothing is started without your approval.
What causes the Citroen EAT6 and EAT8 to hesitate between gears?
The most common causes are valve spool deposits reducing hydraulic pressure to the shift solenoids, degraded transmission fluid reducing lubrication and shift quality, partial torque converter lock-up timing issues and in some cases older TCU software. A full fluid and filter service resolves many EAT shift hesitation complaints and should always be the first step before more expensive repairs are considered.
Do you repair Citroen manual gearboxes as well as automatics?
Yes. We repair all Citroen transmission types including EAT8, EAT6, ETG, older 4-speed and 6-speed automatics and manual gearboxes across all models including the C1, C3, C4, C5, Berlingo, Dispatch and Relay.
How much does a Citroen gearbox repair cost?
It depends on the fault and transmission type. An ETG actuator replacement or EAT fluid service costs considerably less than a full rebuild. After a full diagnostic we give you a clear cost breakdown before anything is started. All our Citroen gearbox repairs are priced well below main dealer rates and we offer 0% finance to spread the cost.
How long does a Citroen gearbox repair take?
An ETG actuator replacement or EAT fluid service can often be completed in one to two days. A full gearbox rebuild typically takes two to three days once parts have been received. We always give you a realistic time estimate before work begins.
Do Citroen gearbox repairs come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every Citroen gearbox repair and rebuild at Service4Service comes with a 12-month guarantee on parts and labour. We use OEM-approved parts only and all repairs protect your existing manufacturer's warranty. Every rebuild includes a full fluid and filter change as standard.
Is it worth repairing a Citroen with an ETG gearbox or should I sell the car?
In most cases a repair is significantly cheaper than replacing the car. ETG clutch actuator and clutch repairs are well within the range of cost-effective fixes. Many Citroen owners are quoted high prices at main dealers for a straightforward actuator repair. We will give you an honest assessment and a clear cost before anything is started so you can make the right decision.
