Hyundai Gearbox Repair Specialists for DCT, Automatic, CVT, iMT and Manual Transmissions
Hyundai's 7-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission is one of the most reported gearbox faults we see. Fitted across the i20, i30, Tucson, Kona and ix35, it has a well-documented history of shuddering when pulling away, hesitation under acceleration, overheating in stop-start traffic, jerky low-speed gear changes and in some cases complete transmission failure. Hyundai issued a Technical Service Bulletin for the Tucson DCT in 2016 and faced a class action lawsuit over the same issue. Software updates help in some cases but do not fix the underlying mechanical fault when clutch wear or actuator failure is involved.
Hyundai's 6-speed and 8-speed automatic gearboxes, fitted to larger models including the Santa Fe, Tucson and i40, also develop their own faults. Slipping gears, delayed engagement, rough or erratic shifts, solenoid failure and transmission fluid leaks are all faults we diagnose and repair regularly. The sooner any of these symptoms are investigated the lower the repair cost.

Hyundai Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Hyundai Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
7-Speed DCT Dual-Clutch: Hyundai's 7-speed DCT is fitted across the i20, i30, Tucson, Kona and ix35. It uses two dry clutches one for odd gears and one for even to deliver faster shifts than a conventional automatic. It is Hyundai's most fault-prone transmission. Shuddering when pulling away, hesitation under light throttle, overheating in stop-start traffic and jerky low-speed gear changes are the most reported faults. Clutch pack wear, actuator failure and TCM faults are the primary causes. Hyundai issued a Technical Service Bulletin in 2016 and faced legal action in the US over the same issue.
-
6-Speed Automatic: The Hyundai 6-speed torque converter automatic is fitted to a wide range of models including older versions of the Tucson, Santa Fe, i40 and Genesis. It is generally a more robust unit than the DCT but develops faults with age and mileage. Delayed engagement when selecting drive or reverse, slipping gears, rough or hesitant shifts and solenoid wear are the most common issues. Fluid degradation accelerates internal wear and a fluid and filter change is the most cost-effective preventative service.
-
8-Speed Automatic: Newer and larger Hyundai models including the Santa Fe, Tucson and Ioniq 6 use an 8-speed torque converter automatic. Common faults include transmission slipping, erratic or harsh shifts, solenoid failure, valve body issues and fluid leaks. Full diagnostics confirm whether a targeted repair or full rebuild is the right approach. We use Hyundai-specific equipment to read transmission fault codes before any parts are ordered.
-
CVT Transmission: Some Hyundai models including the i20 and Accent use a CVT instead of a fixed-ratio automatic. The CVT uses a belt and pulley system to deliver smooth, stepless acceleration. Common faults include belt wear causing slipping, shuddering under acceleration and fluid degradation reducing shift quality. Regular fluid changes using Hyundai-approved CVT fluid are the most effective way to prevent premature failure.
-
Manual Gearbox: Hyundai manual gearboxes are fitted across the full range from the i10 and i20 to the Tucson and Santa Fe. They are generally reliable but common faults include synchromesh wear causing grinding on gear changes, difficulty selecting gears, oil leaks and worn linkages. The iMT intelligent manual transmission on newer models adds an automated clutch function and can develop clutch actuator faults similar to those seen on the DCT. Most manual gearbox faults can be repaired without a full replacement.
The Functionality of Hyundai Gearboxes
-
Smooth Gear Shifting: Hyundai's 6-speed and 8-speed automatic transmissions use a torque converter and planetary gear sets to deliver smooth, progressive gear changes across all driving conditions. The transmission control unit continuously monitors vehicle speed, throttle position and engine load to time shifts precisely, keeping gear changes smooth whether you are pulling away from a junction or overtaking at motorway speed.
-
Fuel Efficiency: Hyundai's DCT and 8-speed automatic transmissions are built with fuel economy in mind. The DCT eliminates the power loss associated with a torque converter by using direct clutch engagement, improving efficiency particularly during urban driving. The 8-speed automatic spreads gear ratios more widely than the older 6-speed unit, allowing the engine to run at lower revs during cruising and reducing fuel consumption on longer journeys.
-
Adaptive Performance: Hyundai transmissions adapt shift patterns to driving style and road conditions. In Normal mode the gearbox prioritises smooth, fuel-efficient shifts. In Sport mode it holds gears longer and responds more quickly to throttle inputs for a more responsive feel. On models with driving mode selection, the transmission adjusts in combination with the engine management and steering to give a consistent feel across each mode.
-
Driver Control: Hyundai automatics and DCT models offer manual gear selection via paddle shifters or the gear lever, giving drivers more control when descending hills, towing or wanting a more involved driving experience. The iMT intelligent manual transmission on newer i20 and Tucson models adds an automated clutch function that removes the need to depress the clutch pedal when changing gear, making manual driving less tiring in traffic without changing to a full automatic.
-
Rapid Response: Hyundai's 7-speed DCT uses two separate clutches to pre-select the next gear before the current one is released, delivering near-instantaneous gear changes with no power interruption. This makes the DCT particularly effective for responsive acceleration and overtaking. When working correctly it is one of the fastest-shifting transmissions in the mainstream automotive segment, though its sensitivity to heat and wear means regular inspection is important to maintain that performance.

Hyundai Gearbox Repair FAQs
Understanding your vehicle's maintenance needs, and addressing issues promptly are key to maintaining your car's performance and reliability. If you have specific questions about your vehicle or an Hyundai gearbox repair issue, don't hesitate to call Service4Service on 0808 164 0418 for guidance.
What are the signs my Hyundai gearbox needs repairing?
The clearest signs are shuddering or hesitation when pulling away, jerky gear changes at low speed, slipping where the engine revs but the car does not accelerate, a delay when selecting drive or reverse, whining or clunking noises, transmission fluid leaking underneath the car or a gearbox warning light on the dashboard. On Hyundai DCT models these symptoms often appear in stop-start traffic or hot weather and get progressively worse if ignored.
What should I do if my Hyundai DCT is shuddering?
Stop driving aggressively and book a diagnostic as soon as possible. DCT shuddering is caused by clutch wear or actuator faults and will not resolve on its own. Continuing to drive with a shuddering DCT accelerates internal damage and turns a manageable clutch repair into a full gearbox rebuild. Call us on 0808 164 0418 and we can discuss the symptoms, give you an initial estimate and arrange collection if the car is not safe to drive.
Will a software update fix my Hyundai DCT problem?
A software update can improve shift quality temporarily but it does not fix underlying mechanical wear in the clutch packs or actuators. Hyundai issued a Technical Service Bulletin for the Tucson DCT in 2016 but many owners found the update did not resolve the shuddering long term. If the problem returns after a software update, the mechanical components need to be inspected and repaired.
Can a Hyundai DCT gearbox be repaired without replacing the whole unit?
In most cases yes. Clutch pack replacement, actuator repair and TCM reprogramming resolve the majority of Hyundai DCT faults without needing a full gearbox replacement. We carry out a full diagnostic first to identify the exact fault so you only pay for what is actually needed. Nothing is started without your approval.
Do you repair Hyundai 6-speed and 8-speed automatic gearboxes?
Yes. We repair all Hyundai automatic transmission types including the 6-speed and 8-speed torque converter automatics fitted to the Santa Fe, Tucson and i40. Common faults we deal with include delayed engagement, transmission slipping, solenoid failure, valve body issues, harsh shifting and fluid leaks. We diagnose the fault fully before recommending any work.
What is the Hyundai iMT and what faults does it develop?
The iMT or intelligent manual transmission is fitted to newer Hyundai i20 and Tucson models. It uses an automated clutch actuator to remove the need for a clutch pedal when changing gear, while still using a traditional manual gearbox. The actuator is the primary failure point. Faults include difficulty engaging gears, jerky or unresponsive clutch engagement and warning lights. We diagnose and repair Hyundai iMT actuator faults across all models.
How much does a Hyundai gearbox repair cost?
It depends on the fault and the transmission type. A clutch pack replacement or solenoid repair costs considerably less than a full rebuild. After a full diagnostic we give you a clear cost breakdown before any work begins. All our Hyundai gearbox repairs are priced well below main dealer rates and we offer 0% finance to spread the cost.
How long does a Hyundai gearbox repair take?
Minor repairs such as solenoid replacement or a fluid service can often be completed in one to two days. A full DCT rebuild or gearbox replacement typically takes two to three days once parts have been received. We always give you a realistic time estimate before any work starts and keep you updated throughout.
Do Hyundai gearbox repairs come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every Hyundai automatic gearbox repair and rebuild at Service4Service comes with a 12-month guarantee on parts and labour. We use OEM-approved parts only and all repairs are carried out in a way that protects your existing manufacturer's warranty. Every rebuild includes a full fluid and filter change as standard.
Is it worth repairing a Hyundai DCT or should I sell the car?
In most cases a repair is significantly cheaper than replacing the car. The Hyundai DCT has a reputation for expensive main dealer quotes but the majority of faults can be repaired at a fraction of that cost by a specialist. We will give you an honest assessment of the fault and the cost before anything is started so you can make the right decision.
