The value of regular maintenance between MOTs

Regular maintenance between MOTs is a critical investment in vehicle safety, reliability, and long-term cost-saving, providing benefits that a yearly MOT alone cannot guarantee. While an MOT is a legal, annual check that verifies a vehicle meets minimum safety standards on that specific day, it does not include preventative maintenance or a comprehensive inspection of mechanical components.

The key values of regular maintenance:

  • Preventing costly breakdowns: Routine servicing detects small, often inexpensive issues before they become major, expensive failures like engine failure.
  • Significantly reducing long-term costs: spending on preventative maintenance avoids the expensive repair bills later. For example, replacing inexpensive brake pads prevents expensive damage to discs.
  • Improving safety: Regular checks ensure critical systems, such as brakes, suspension and tyres arein optimal condition.

The safety implications of uneven tyre wear

Uneven tyre wear poses significant risks including reduced grip, increased braking distance and compromised handling. It often signals underlying problems such as poor wheel alignment, improper inflation, or damaged suspension. This uneven wear can lead to premature tyre failure, such as blowouts and potentially illegal, unsafe and voided insurance coverage.

Are headlights alignment tested?

Yes, headlight alignment is strictly tested during the annual MOT in the UK to ensure they are not too high, low, or misaligned, which can impair driver vision or blind others. Misaligned, faulty, or cloudy headlights are a common MOT failure point.

Does the MOT check fluid levels?

The MOT test does not typically check the levels of engine oil or coolant, but it does check specific safety-related fluids, such as ensuring sufficient brake fluid and power steering fluid. It also requires that washer fluid is present to operate the windscreen wipers. A, significant fluid leaks that cause a safety hazard will result in a fail.

Is the horn tested during an MOT?

Yes, the horn is tested during an MOT to ensure it works properly, is secure, and emits a continuous, uniform, and sufficiently loud sound. It is a critical safety item; a non-functional or unsuitable horn will result in a major defect, causing the vehicle to fail its MOT.
