The Most Common Problems With Volvo Vehicles

Volvo is a well-known manufacturer here in the UK and understandably so. With a vast range of SUVs, Saloons and Estate/Hatchbacks on offer, they provide a diverse range of Electric and hybrid cars ready for UK roads. The Swedish manufacturer prides itself on its luxury range of cars, but that certainly doesn’t mean its vehicles are free from issues. From transmission problems to failings with the cooling systems, here are some of the most common problems reported by Volvo owners:

Transmission Problems

As we all know, the transmission on an automatic vehicle is one of the most important parts of the car – without it, driving would be an unpleasant and dangerous, if not impossible, process. We all put a lot of trust and faith in the transmission systems in our cars, but for Volvo drivers, this trust can sometimes feel misplaced. According to MotorandWheels, the Volvo XC90 gearbox seems to be particularly temperamental, claiming that “most complaints are about its transmission setup, and other problems are rough shifting to complete transmission failure.” (https://motorandwheels.com/problems-with-volvo-cars/) General maintenance can typically relieve the strain and fix any issues but if you’re unsure, bringing your vehicle in for transmission or gearbox repairs can help set your mind at rest.

Water-Logged Fuse Box

Due to the location of the fuse box under the dashboard, Volvo cars are often reported to have an issue with water leaking into the box and becoming trapped there. In particular, this affects one of Volvo’s most reliable models, the Volvo 240. MotorAndWheels report that “the reason is that the Volve 240 model has a fuse box under the dashboard, and water can access the box,” and that “once the fuse box is wet, it will affect the electrical systems.” As you may expect, water and fuses don’t mix well and leaking water can cause the fuses and electrics to short out and, in extreme cases, even lead to fires. This is a serious issue that needs to be monitored. Getting it checked at least once a year by a qualified technician can help you to ensure that your fuse box, and ultimately your vehicle, is safe to use.

Power Steering Problems

Volvo owners have also seemingly been plagued by power steering leaks as of late. According to Medium, the problem can occur “due to hose failures that carry the fluid from the reservoir to the steering system.” (https://medium.com/@beverlyallender658/top-5-common-volvo-problems-and-repairs-eb803279e433) While this is a pretty simple problem to fix with the replacement of an inexpensive part, for drivers of Volvo vehicles, it can be inconvenient to have it replaced or to wonder when it might spring a leak. You should check this hose regularly for leaks to ensure that you don’t fall into any trouble while out on the road.

Engine problems

The Volvo XC60 is a much-loved vehicle amongst Volvo owners, but it isn’t without it’s complaints too. In fact, according to Motor and Wheels, more than “50 complaints have been received about the 2010, 2015 and 2019 model years” when it comes to the engine. Drivers have reported various issues with “sporadic loss of power steering, defective satellite navigation system, climate system problems, overheating of the engine and poor gas mileage.” These issues can often be repaired quickly and efficiently if caught early, so it’s important to book your vehicle in with a mechanic if you’re witnessing these issues.
