Why is DSG judder worse at low speed?

A DSG uses clutches to manage movement from a standstill. In slow traffic, those clutches repeatedly engage and release rather than staying fully locked.

Existing clutch wear or poor control can therefore feel much more obvious at low speed.

Does judder always mean worn clutches?

No. Worn clutches are one common cause, but a similar vibration can come from the mechatronic control unit, incorrect adaptation settings, a worn flywheel or damaged mounts.

A proper diagnosis should consider all of these before the clutch is replaced.

What is DSG adaptation?

The gearbox control unit learns how the clutches engage. Those learned values help the transmission apply the clutches smoothly.

If the values are incorrect, recalibration may help. If the clutch material is physically worn, recalibration cannot repair it.

Can the mechatronic unit cause judder?

Yes. The mechatronic unit controls hydraulic pressure and gear selection. A fault can cause hesitation, harsh engagement or unpredictable clutch behaviour.

A light judder may not mean immediate failure, but it should be checked before it becomes worse.
