Automatic gearbox problems in the Vauxhall Astra and Insignia usually show up as slipping, harsh or delayed gear changes, a gearbox warning light or limp mode. The common causes are worn fluid, faulty solenoids or valve body wear, torque converter problems and electronic faults. Most of them can be diagnosed and repaired without fitting a replacement gearbox.
Which automatic gearboxes Vauxhall used
Both the Astra and the Insignia have been sold with conventional torque-converter automatics, and some versions of the Astra have also been offered with a CVT. Which gearbox you have depends on the year, engine and trim, so the first job is to identify it. Our guide to which automatic gearbox type you have is a good starting point.
The symptoms below apply mainly to the torque-converter automatics.
Warning signs
- Slipping, where revs rise without the car accelerating
- Harsh or delayed changes between gears
- A clunk or bang when selecting Drive or Reverse
- Flaring between gears under acceleration
- A gearbox warning or a spanner symbol on the dash
- Limp mode, stuck in one gear
Typical causes
Old or low fluid. Automatic transmission fluid wears out and leaks can drop the level. Low or degraded fluid is one of the most common reasons for slipping and harsh shifts.
Solenoid and valve body faults. These control the oil pressure that makes each gear engage. Wear or contamination causes erratic shifting. See our guides to solenoid faults and valve body faults.
Torque converter problems. A failing converter produces shudder at steady speeds and can contaminate the fluid. See torque converter problems.
Sensors and electronics. Speed sensors, wiring and the control unit can all trigger faults and limp mode.

What happens at diagnosis
We read the fault codes, check the fluid level and condition, test the sensors and road test the car. The aim is to separate a cheap fix, such as a leak or a sensor, from a mechanical repair, before any parts are ordered.
Repair options
- Fluid and filter service with the correct specification fluid
- Sensor, wiring or software repair
- Solenoid or valve body repair
- Torque converter replacement
- Rebuild where internal damage is confirmed
Our automatic gearbox repair page covers the process. Work is covered by a 12-month or 12,000-mile guarantee on parts and labour.
When not to keep driving
If the car will not move, slips badly, or smells of burning, stop driving it. Continued use turns a repairable fault into a rebuild.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Vauxhall automatic gearbox slipping?
Low or degraded fluid, worn clutches, or solenoid and valve body faults are the usual reasons. A fluid check and fault code read narrow it down.
Are Vauxhall automatic gearboxes reliable?
Many are, and reliability depends heavily on servicing, driving style and the specific gearbox fitted. Neglected fluid changes cause many of the problems we see.
Can I drive the Insignia in limp mode?
You can usually drive it a short distance at reduced speed, but you should not keep using it. Get the codes read as soon as possible.
Does my Astra have a CVT?
Some Astras were offered with a CVT, but not all. Check the handbook or ask us to identify it from the registration.
Is a gearbox fluid change worth doing?
Often yes, especially on higher-mileage cars, though the right approach depends on the gearbox and its condition. A specialist can advise before you commit.
