The Peugeot 308 and 3008 EAT6 automatic can develop jerky shifts, hesitation, a juddering start and a gearbox fault message, with some cars dropping into limp mode. The usual causes are tired fluid, wear in the valve body and solenoids, torque converter problems and sensor or software faults. A diagnostic identifies which one you have before money is spent on parts.
What the EAT6 is
EAT6 is the name PSA used for its six-speed torque-converter automatic, built with Aisin. It was fitted across Peugeot and Citroen models, including the 308 and 3008, with petrol and diesel engines. A newer eight-speed EAT8 has since replaced it in many models.
Because it is a conventional torque-converter automatic, the faults follow the pattern of other automatics: fluid, hydraulics, converter and electronics.
Common symptoms
- Jerky or delayed gear changes
- Hesitation or judder when pulling away
- Flare, where revs jump between shifts
- A gearbox fault message or warning light
- Limp mode, with the car stuck in a gear
- Shuddering at steady speed, which can point to the torque converter
The usual causes
Fluid condition. Some manufacturers describe the fluid as filled for life, but heat and mileage still degrade it. Tired fluid reduces shift quality and speeds up wear.
Valve body and solenoids. Wear in the hydraulic controls changes line pressure and shift timing. See our guides to valve body faults and solenoid faults.
Torque converter. The lock-up clutch inside it can wear and cause shudder. See torque converter problems.
Mechatronic and control faults. Sensors, wiring, and the electronic control module can all trigger limp mode on an otherwise healthy gearbox.

Diagnosis before repair
Fault codes, live data, a fluid check and a road test separate a software or sensor fault from a hydraulic or mechanical one. You get a written finding and a clear quote before we start.
Repair options
- Fluid service with the correct specification
- Sensor, wiring and software repair
- Valve body and solenoid repair
- Torque converter replacement
- Full rebuild where internal damage is found
Our automatic gearbox repair service is backed by a 12-month or 12,000-mile guarantee on parts and labour.
Does the fluid need changing on a sealed gearbox?
Many specialists recommend servicing it at sensible intervals regardless of the lifetime-fill description, but the right interval depends on your mileage and use. Ask for advice based on how the car is driven.
Frequently asked questions
What is the EAT6 gearbox?
EAT6 is PSA’s six-speed torque-converter automatic, used in many Peugeot and Citroen models including the 308 and 3008.
Why does my Peugeot 308 automatic judder?
It could be a torque converter lock-up fault, worn fluid, or a hydraulic control problem. A diagnostic and road test separate them.
Is the Peugeot EAT6 gearbox reliable?
Many run for years. As with any automatic, missed servicing and heavy use increase the chance of faults.
Can an EAT6 be repaired rather than replaced?
Often yes. Many faults sit in the valve body, solenoids, converter or electronics and can be repaired.
What should I do if the gearbox warning light comes on?
Have the fault codes read promptly. The light can mean anything from a sensor fault to internal wear, and continued driving can make it worse.
