The most common Nissan Qashqai CVT problems are juddering at low speed, a whining noise, the engine revving without the car accelerating, and a delay when you select Drive or Reverse. These usually point to belt and pulley wear, tired fluid, or a fault in the hydraulic and electronic controls. Caught early, many of these are repairable without replacing the whole gearbox.
How the Qashqai CVT works
A CVT has no fixed gears. A steel belt or chain runs between two cone-shaped pulleys that change diameter to vary the ratio smoothly. That is why a CVT feels seamless, and also why it is sensitive to fluid condition and wear: the belt and pulleys depend on precise hydraulic pressure and clean fluid to grip properly.
Nissan offered CVT automatics on selected Qashqai engines across both the first generation and the current generation, so check whether your car has one before assuming a CVT fault. Our guide to which automatic gearbox type you have helps you identify it.
Symptoms of a failing Qashqai CVT
- Juddering or shuddering when pulling away or at low speeds
- A whining or droning noise that changes with speed
- Engine revs rising without matching acceleration, which feels like slipping
- A delay or clunk when selecting Drive or Reverse
- Limp mode, with a gearbox or drivetrain warning on the dash
- Fluid leaks or a burning smell
Our wider guide to CVT gearbox problems covers these symptoms in more detail.
What usually causes them
Fluid breakdown. CVT fluid has to cope with heat and heavy friction demands. Old or overheated fluid reduces grip, which can lead to slipping, judder and accelerated wear.
Belt and pulley wear. Metal debris from wear contaminates the fluid and damages the pulley surfaces, so one problem feeds the next.
Valve body and solenoid faults. The hydraulic controls that set belt tension can stick or wear. See our guides to valve body faults and solenoid faults.
Control unit and software issues. A confused control unit can give harsh engagement and warning lights even when the mechanicals are sound.

What to check when buying a used Qashqai CVT
- Ask for service history that shows CVT fluid changes with the correct specified fluid
- Test drive from cold, pulling away gently and then firmly, and listen for whine or judder
- Check for warning lights and ask for fault codes to be read
- Look under the car for fluid leaks around the gearbox
A car with no gearbox service history is a gamble, because the damage CVTs suffer from neglected fluid is not visible from outside.
Repair options
A proper diagnosis comes first: fluid condition, fault codes, pressure behaviour and any debris. Depending on what is found, the repair may be a fluid service, a valve body or solenoid repair, a control unit repair, or a rebuild with a replacement belt and pulley set where the damage is internal.
We repair CVTs across all major manufacturers, and see our CVT gearbox repair page for how that works.
Frequently asked questions
Are Nissan Qashqai CVT gearboxes reliable?
Many run for a long time, especially when the fluid has been serviced on schedule. Problems tend to appear in cars that were neglected, used for lots of short journeys or towed heavily.
Why does my Qashqai judder when I pull away?
Low-speed judder in a CVT usually means slipping caused by tired fluid, belt or pulley wear, or a hydraulic control fault. It should be diagnosed rather than ignored.
Can I change CVT fluid myself?
CVT fluid is specific to the gearbox and the level and procedure matter. A wrong fluid or wrong fill level can do real damage, so this is best done with the correct fluid and equipment.
Can a CVT be repaired or does it need replacing?
Many CVT faults are repairable, particularly valve body, solenoid and control problems. Replacement or rebuild is for cases where the belt and pulleys are badly worn.
Is it safe to drive a Qashqai in limp mode?
Limp mode limits speed and gears to protect the gearbox. You can usually drive it carefully to a garage, but continuing for long distances risks more damage.
