Nissan Juke CVT Gearbox Fault: Your Options Out of Warranty

Nov 2, 2026 · Malachy

Nissan Juke CVT gearbox under diagnosis

If your Nissan Juke has a CVT gearbox fault and the warranty has run out, you have three realistic routes: ask Nissan for a goodwill contribution, have a gearbox specialist diagnose and repair the unit, or replace the gearbox. The right one depends on exactly what has failed, which is why the first step is a written diagnosis, not a quote for a replacement.

What a Juke CVT fault looks like

  • Juddering or hesitation when pulling away
  • A whining or droning noise that rises with speed
  • The engine revving without matching acceleration
  • A delay engaging Drive or Reverse
  • A drivetrain or gearbox warning light, or limp mode

These are general CVT symptoms and they have several possible causes, from fluid and belt wear to hydraulic control faults. Our guide to CVT gearbox problems explains each one.

Route one: ask Nissan for goodwill

Manufacturers sometimes contribute towards repairs on cars that are out of warranty, especially for well-known faults or cars with full dealer service history. Owners have reported being offered a share of the parts cost, but there is no entitlement and the answer varies by car, mileage and history.

  • Contact Nissan customer care as well as the dealer, and put the request in writing
  • Include your service history, mileage and the date the symptoms began
  • Ask for any decision, including a refusal, in writing
  • Do not authorise work until you know what has been offered

Route two: specialist repair

An independent gearbox specialist can diagnose the exact fault and repair it, often without fitting a complete replacement. Valve body, solenoid and control faults are common and repairable, and a rebuild is available where the belt and pulleys are worn.

Look for a specialist who uses manufacturer warranty-approved parts, gives you a clear quote before work starts, and offers a guarantee on parts and labour. Ours is 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Route three: replacement gearbox

Replacement is sometimes the right answer, for example when the internal damage is extensive. It is not the automatic answer. Ask any garage recommending replacement to show you why a repair or rebuild would not work, and whether a reconditioned unit is an option. See our page on CVT gearbox repair.

Questions to ask before you agree to any work

  • What exactly has failed, and how do you know?
  • What does the quote cover, and is the diagnosis included?
  • What parts will be fitted and are they manufacturer approved?
  • What guarantee comes with the work, and what does it cover?
  • Will you contact my warranty provider if I have one?

Frequently asked questions

Is the Nissan Juke CVT gearbox a known problem?

CVT faults are reported on several small crossovers, including the Juke, and owners often ask Nissan for help once the warranty has ended. Whether yours is covered depends on its age, mileage and history.

Will Nissan pay for my Juke gearbox out of warranty?

There is no automatic entitlement. Some owners have been offered a contribution as a goodwill gesture, so it is worth asking in writing.

Do I have to use a Nissan dealer for gearbox repairs?

No. An independent specialist can repair your gearbox, and using manufacturer approved parts helps protect any remaining warranty.

Can a Juke CVT be repaired instead of replaced?

Often yes. Many faults are in the valve body, solenoids or control unit, and these can be repaired without replacing the whole gearbox.

How do I know whether my CVT fault is serious?

Judder, slipping, whining and warning lights should all be diagnosed promptly. A diagnostic tells you whether it is a minor fault or internal wear.
