Land Rover Discovery Sport and Evoque 9-Speed Gearbox Problems

Land Rover 9-speed automatic gearbox in for diagnosis

The 9-speed automatic fitted to many Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models can suffer from hesitation, harsh or jerky shifts, delayed engagement and limp mode. These faults have several possible causes, including software, sensors, wiring, the hydraulic control unit and internal wear, so a proper diagnosis has to come before any decision on repair or replacement.

Which models and which gearbox

From 2015, Land Rover fitted a nine-speed automatic to the Discovery Sport and to the Evoque, usually paired with the Ingenium diesel and petrol engines. Earlier models used a six-speed automatic. The nine-speed is a complex transmission with a lot of shift logic, so software and electronics play a big part in how it behaves.

Check your handbook or registration if you are unsure which transmission your car has.

Symptoms owners report

  • Hesitation or a delay when pulling away
  • Harsh, jerky or flaring gear changes
  • Shuddering at low speeds
  • Gearbox fault or transmission warning messages
  • Limp mode, where the car holds one gear and limits power
  • Difficulty selecting Drive or Reverse

See our guide to limp mode in automatic gearboxes if your car has dropped into it.

What can cause them

Software and adaptations. The transmission relies on adaptive values and calibration. Out-of-date software or lost adaptations can cause rough shifting without any mechanical wear.

Sensors and wiring. Speed sensors, connectors and harnesses can fail and send the gearbox control unit wrong information.

Hydraulic control and solenoids. Wear in the valve body and solenoids affects pressure and shift quality. See our guides to valve body faults and solenoid faults.

Internal wear. Clutch packs and the torque converter wear over time, particularly if fluid service has been missed.

Why diagnosis comes first

Because so many different faults produce the same hesitation, replacing parts by guesswork gets expensive quickly. Reading fault codes, checking live data, testing sensors and inspecting the fluid points to the actual cause. The result is a written diagnosis you can use whether you repair with us or elsewhere.

Repair options

  • Software update or adaptation reset where that is the fault
  • Sensor and wiring repair
  • Valve body and solenoid repair
  • Torque converter or clutch replacement
  • A rebuild where internal damage is found

Many faults on these gearboxes can be fixed without replacing the complete unit. Our automatic gearbox repair page explains the process, and every repair carries a 12-month or 12,000-mile guarantee on parts and labour.

Warranty and dealer cover

If your Land Rover is within its manufacturer or an extended warranty, check the terms before arranging independent work. We can liaise with major warranty providers where the policy allows.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Discovery Sport jerking between gears?

Jerky shifting can come from software and adaptation issues, sensor faults, solenoid or valve body wear, or worn clutches. A diagnostic identifies which.

Is the 9-speed gearbox in the Evoque unreliable?

Experiences vary. It is a complex gearbox and some owners report shift quality complaints, but many cars run without trouble when serviced properly.

Can the gearbox be repaired rather than replaced?

In many cases yes. Control, sensor and valve body faults are often repairable without replacing the complete gearbox.

What should I do if my Land Rover goes into limp mode?

Drive carefully to a safe place, avoid long journeys, and have the fault codes read. Limp mode protects the gearbox but it signals a fault that needs finding.

Should the gearbox fluid be changed?

Land Rover has described some fluid as lifetime fill, but many specialists recommend servicing it. Ask a gearbox specialist what is sensible for your mileage and use.
