What Is a Valve Body in an Automatic Gearbox?
The valve body is the hydraulic control centre inside many automatic transmissions. It directs gearbox fluid to the correct circuits so clutches and gears apply at the right time.
Why does an automatic gearbox need a valve body?
An automatic transmission uses hydraulic pressure to apply internal clutches and control gear changes.
The valve body contains fluid passages, valves, springs and solenoids that direct that pressure around the transmission.
What are solenoids inside the valve body?
Solenoids are electrically controlled valves. The gearbox control system commands them to alter fluid flow or pressure.
This is one reason modern automatic gearboxes are both hydraulic and electronic systems.
What can go wrong with a valve body?
- Worn regulator valves
