Ford Focus Powershift Clutch Judder: Causes and Repair Options

Oct 29, 2026 · Malachy

Dual clutch pack removed from a Ford Focus Powershift gearbox

Clutch judder in a Ford Focus Powershift is nearly always caused by a worn or contaminated clutch pack, a leaking seal, or a clutch that has lost its correct engagement settings. The shake you feel when pulling away is the clutch grabbing unevenly. It is a repair job, not a reason to scrap the car, provided it is dealt with before the damage spreads to the rest of the gearbox.

Which Focus models are affected

The Powershift was fitted to the Focus from 2008 to 2019, across the second-generation facelift and the third-generation car. The same dry-clutch six-speed unit also appeared in other Fords including the C-Max, and larger Fords used related dual-clutch gearboxes.

If your Focus has a gear selector with a D and a manual gate but no clutch pedal, it is a Powershift or another automatic. The paperwork or a registration check will tell us exactly which.

Judder, hesitation and shudder: what each one means

  • Judder when pulling away. The clutch is grabbing and releasing unevenly. The usual causes are worn friction material, contamination or lost clutch settings.
  • Hesitation before moving. The gearbox is slow to close the clutch. This points towards actuator, control module or clutch wear problems.
  • Shudder at steady low speeds. Often a clutch that is overheating or a seal leaking fluid onto the plates.

Why the clutch fails early

A dry dual-clutch does not run in oil, so it relies on the clutch plates slipping smoothly as you move away. Short journeys, heavy traffic and repeated hill starts all make it slip more and run hotter. Heat hardens and glazes the friction surface, and that produces the judder.

Fluid contamination is the other big cause. If a seal at the engine side or on the input shaft leaks, oil reaches the clutch and it grabs unpredictably. Replacing the clutch without replacing the seal that caused the contamination means the fault returns.

What a repair involves

  • Fault codes and clutch wear values are read before anything is removed
  • The gearbox is separated from the engine and the clutch assembly is inspected for wear and oil
  • Both clutches are replaced as a set, along with any leaking seals and worn release components
  • The clutch engagement settings are relearned with diagnostic equipment, which is essential for smooth take-off
  • A road test confirms the judder has gone

The relearn step is where cheap repairs go wrong. A new clutch that has not been adapted to the gearbox can judder just like the old one.

Clutch repair or replacement gearbox?

If the gearbox casing, shafts and gears are sound, a clutch and seal repair is the proportionate answer. A replacement or rebuild only makes sense where there is damage inside the gearbox, such as scored shafts or broken selector parts, and a diagnosis tells you which situation you are in. Our DCT gearbox repair page explains how we approach it.

Buying a used Focus Powershift

Test drive it from cold, pull away gently on a slope and in traffic, and listen for judder or a slow take-up. Ask for service history and whether the clutch has been replaced. A seller who will not let you drive it in stop-start conditions is a warning sign.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Focus Powershift shake when I pull away?

The clutch is grabbing unevenly. The usual causes are worn clutch plates, oil contamination from a leaking seal, or clutch settings that have drifted out of adjustment.

Can I replace just one clutch?

Both clutches work as a pair and wear together, so they are normally replaced as a set. Replacing one often leaves you with uneven engagement.

Is judder dangerous to drive with?

A mild judder is usually not unsafe in the short term, but it will get worse and can lead to a complete loss of drive. If the car drops into neutral or shows a warning, stop driving it.

Will a clutch relearn fix the judder on its own?

Only if the clutch is in good condition and the settings have simply drifted. If the plates are worn or contaminated, a relearn will not cure it.

Does the Focus Powershift need the gearbox replaced?

Usually not. Most judder faults are cured by a clutch and seal repair. A replacement is only needed when the gearbox itself is damaged.
