BMW 3 Series automatic gearbox repair for every generation
From the E46 to the G20, the 3 Series has used ZF-built automatics throughout, so we know where each generation wears.
The 3 Series has been fitted with ZF-built torque converter automatics for most of its life: a 5-speed on the E46, a 6-speed on the E90 family, and an 8-speed on the F30 and G20. BMW calls them Steptronic, and with the correct servicing they can last a very long time.
Because so many 3 Series cars are diesels that cover big annual mileages, a lot of them arrive with the original fluid and a gearbox that has simply run out of life. Flare between gears, a thump into Drive, harsh downshifts and a gearbox warning light are the usual signs.
We repair and rebuild 3 Series gearboxes with OEM-approved parts, and every repair carries a 12-month parts and labour guarantee. Many are repaired at valve body or solenoid level without replacing the whole gearbox. Call 0808 164 0418 with the registration and we will tell you which gearbox your BMW 3 Series has.
Why use a BMW 3 Series gearbox specialist
The 3 Series is the most common BMW gearbox we see, and that experience matters. A specialist who has worked on hundreds of 6 and 8-speed units recognises the pattern behind a symptom quickly, so the diagnosis is faster and the repair more accurate. Call 0808 164 0418 to speak to a gearbox specialist about your BMW 3 Series.

Understanding the BMW 3 Series Steptronic across generations
The same family of gearbox has changed a lot over twenty years, and so have the faults.
The 5 and 6-speed Steptronic
These gearboxes are mechanically sound but ageing. Seals harden, clutch material wears and the mechatronic unit on 6-speed cars can leak and lose pressure.
A low fluid level or a worn sleeve starves the clutches, which then slip and wear faster. Catching it early often saves a full rebuild.
- Slip between 2nd and 3rd
- Fluid on the floor
- Bang into gear
The F30 and G20 ZF 8-speed
The eight-speed automatic is smooth and efficient, and generally robust. It still depends on clean fluid, healthy solenoids and a working converter lock-up.
Faults on this unit are often shudder at cruising speed, harsh downshifts and solenoid or mechatronic codes, and many are repairable without replacing the gearbox.
- Shudder at cruising speed
- Harsh downshifts
- Solenoid fault codes
Common BMW 3 Series gearbox problems
BMW 3 Series gearbox problems are well documented, and most follow a recognisable pattern by generation. The symptoms below are the ones we see most.
or call 0808 164 0418
BMW 3 Series automatic gearbox slipping
If the revs climb but the 3 Series does not accelerate to match, clutches inside the Steptronic are slipping. It often appears on a 6-speed first as a slip between second and third. Ring 0808 164 0418 as soon as you notice it.
BMW 3 Series gearbox juddering
A judder at around 50 to 60 mph, particularly on a diesel under light load, usually points to the torque converter lock-up clutch rather than the engine. Describe it to a specialist on 0808 164 0418.
BMW 3 Series gearbox warning light
A gearbox fault or transmission malfunction message means a code has been stored. On a 3 Series it often relates to solenoids, sensors or the mechatronic unit. Call 0808 164 0418 and we will explain what the codes are likely to mean.
BMW 3 Series limp mode
A 3 Series in limp mode usually sticks in third or fourth with reduced power. It can follow a mechatronic, sensor or solenoid fault, and it sometimes clears after a restart. Call 0808 164 0418 before you drive any further.
Bang into Drive or Reverse
A hard knock as the gearbox engages, often worse when cold.
Slow 2nd to 3rd change
A long, lazy upshift that lets the revs hang before the gear arrives.
Fluid leaking from the sump or sleeve
Visible oil under the car, or a low fluid level on 6-speed units with a leaking mechatronic sleeve.
Which gearbox does your BMW 3 Series have?
The 3 Series has used a different gearbox in most generations. The table is a guide only. Give us your registration and we will confirm what your car has.
ZF 5-speed Steptronic or manual
Slow or harsh shifts and slipping as clutches wear on older high-mileage cars.
ZF 6-speed Steptronic or manual
Mechatronic faults, valve body wear and leaks at the mechatronic sleeve.
ZF 8-speed Steptronic or manual
Converter shudder, solenoid faults and harsh shifts where fluid has not been changed.
ZF 8-speed Steptronic or manual
Young cars. Faults tend to be sensor, software or early valve body issues.

BMW 3 Series gearbox repair: the practical questions
BMW 3 Series gearbox rebuild: when it is the right answer
A BMW 3 Series gearbox rebuild is the right answer when the clutches are worn and the valve body or converter has taken damage from contaminated fluid. It is more than a repair at one component, and we only recommend it when the diagnostic supports it. Not sure which applies to your BMW 3 Series? Call 0808 164 0418 and we will tell you.
How much does BMW 3 Series gearbox repair cost?
BMW 3 Series gearbox repair cost depends on the generation, the gearbox, the fault found and whether a repair or rebuild is the right fix. We explain the options after a free phone diagnosis. Call 0808 164 0418 for a free phone diagnosis and a clear answer.
Is it worth repairing a high-mileage 3 Series gearbox?
Often yes. A 3 Series with a sound engine and body is usually worth keeping, and a repair or rebuild matched to the fault carries a 12-month guarantee. Call 0808 164 0418 for a free phone diagnosis.
Does a 3 Series gearbox need its fluid changed?
BMW describes the fluid as lifetime, but fluid degrades with heat and mileage, and many gearbox faults begin there. We can advise for your car.

In short
The BMW 3 Series has used ZF-built Steptronic automatics for its whole life: 5-speed on the E46, 6-speed on the E90 family and 8-speed on the F30 and G20. Service4Service repairs valve body, solenoid, converter and clutch faults on all of them.
Questions about your car? Call 0808 164 0418 for a free phone diagnosis.
Slipping on a 3 Series means the Steptronic clutches are not holding. The cause could be low or degraded fluid, a pressure fault in the valve body or simple clutch wear. A diagnostic confirms which before anything is repaired. Call 0808 164 0418 for a free phone diagnosis.
Yes. Many 3 Series gearbox faults are repaired at valve body, solenoid or mechatronic level without replacing the whole unit. Where wear is widespread, a full rebuild gives a lasting fix. To talk it through with a specialist, call 0808 164 0418.
The F30, F31, F34 and G20 generations use the ZF 8-speed Steptronic. The E90 family used a 6-speed and the E46 a 5-speed.
Flare is usually worn clutches, low pressure or a valve body fault. At high mileage and with unchanged fluid it is often more than one. Ring 0808 164 0418 and we will explain your options.
Shudder at 50 to 60 mph, high revs at cruise and dark fluid are typical signs. The lock-up clutch inside the converter is usually the part that wears.
We advise against it. Limp mode protects the gearbox, but continued driving can cause more damage. For advice on your car, call 0808 164 0418, 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
Many pass 150,000 miles and some far more, but it depends on servicing and use. Fluid changes and prompt repair of small faults make the biggest difference.
No. The gearbox is the same as the saloon, though towing adds heat and load. Call 0808 164 0418 for a free phone diagnosis.
On 6-speed cars a sleeve between the mechatronic unit and the gearbox can leak, losing fluid and pressure. It is a common repair.
The ZF 8-speed in the F30 and G20 is generally robust, though it still depends on maintenance. Older 5 and 6-speed units are sound but are ageing.
Flaring usually means worn clutches, low pressure or a valve body fault. A diagnostic separates them. To talk it through with a specialist, call 0808 164 0418.
Yes. Towing adds heat and load, so we factor it into the diagnosis and advise on fluid and cooling. Ring 0808 164 0418 and we will explain your options.
Yes. Bespoke collection and delivery is available with repairs over £1,500, and we can arrange recovery if the car cannot be driven. For advice on your car, call 0808 164 0418, 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
