Is your BMW showing any of these?
BMW Steptronic and dual-clutch gearboxes usually give plenty of warning before they fail. Caught early, most of these faults can be fixed with a targeted repair rather than a full replacement.
Drivetrain malfunction warning
A "drivetrain malfunction" or transmission message on the dash, often with reduced power.
Harsh or delayed shifts
A thump into Drive or Reverse, or a pause before the car moves off.
Limp mode
The gearbox holds one gear and cuts power to protect itself.
Slipping or flaring revs
Revs rise between gears but the car doesn't pick up speed.
Oil leaks
Gearbox oil under the car, often from the sump pan seal or the electrical connector seal.
Loss of drive
The car won't move in Drive or Reverse. Stop driving it; we can talk you through collection or recovery.
Not sure what's wrong? Describe the symptoms and a technician will tell you what it's likely to be.

Main dealer quotes for a replacement BMW gearbox often run into thousands of pounds. In many cases the fault is a single part, such as a sump pan seal, mechatronic seal or valve body, that can be repaired or rebuilt for a fraction of that.
We run a full diagnostic first and only recommend what's needed, with a clear quote before any work begins.

BMW gearbox repair FAQs
How much does a BMW gearbox repair cost?
It depends on the fault. A targeted repair costs far less than a rebuild, and a rebuild costs far less than a new gearbox. We give you an initial estimate on the phone and a confirmed quote after diagnosis, before any work starts.
What does a drivetrain malfunction warning mean on my BMW?
It means the car has detected a fault that affects how power reaches the wheels. It can be engine or gearbox related, so a proper diagnostic is the first step. Get it checked before it gets worse.
Can I keep driving with a gearbox warning light?
We don't recommend it. Driving on a known gearbox fault can turn a small repair into a full rebuild. If the car feels different or the warning is on, get it checked as soon as you can.
Can you collect my BMW if it won't drive?
Yes. Tell us where the car is and whether it can be driven, and we'll explain the collection or recovery options. Collection and delivery is included on repairs over £1,500, subject to our terms.
Will the repair protect my existing warranty?
We fit OEM or manufacturer warranty-approved parts, and we work with major UK warranty providers. Let us know about your warranty at the start so we can help with the claim where your policy allows.
What guarantee do I get?
Every BMW gearbox repair and rebuild is guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labour.
How long will my BMW be off the road?
Diagnostic findings are usually ready within 2 to 3 days of collection. Repair time depends on the fault and parts, and we'll give you a time estimate with your quote.
