Mitsubishi Gearbox Repair & Rebuild Specialists
INVECS CVT Automatic, Automatic, Manual and All Transmission Types like Outlander, ASX, Eclipse Cross, L200
COMMON FAULTS WE SEE
CVT Slipping & Shuddering
Belt and pulley wear on INVECS-III CVT models causing slipping, surging under acceleration and shuddering. Particularly reported on 2013 to 2016 Outlander and ASX models. Hydraulic pressure circuit contamination is the primary cause alongside degraded fluid.
CVT Delayed Acceleration
Mitsubishi recalled over 80,000 Outlander and Lancer vehicles in 2016 for CVT delayed acceleration caused by hydraulic pressure circuit contamination and inadequate CVT cooling. A class action was filed in 2021 over the same fault on Outlander models. We diagnose and repair this specific fault pattern.
Eclipse Cross 2nd Gear Fault
The Eclipse Cross manual gearbox has a documented fault where 2nd gear is difficult or impossible to select, particularly on cold starts. Mitsubishi acknowledged the issue and replaced some units under warranty. We diagnose and repair this fault across all Eclipse Cross variants.
Mitsubishi's CVT transmission is the most reported gearbox fault across the Outlander, ASX and Eclipse Cross. The INVECS-III CVT uses a Jatco-supplied belt and pulley system. Belt wear causing slipping and surging under acceleration, shuddering during load changes, overheating under sustained driving and a whining or rattling noise are all commonly reported symptoms. Mitsubishi CVT fluid must be changed every 40,000 miles using Mitsubishi DIA Queen CVT J4 fluid only. Generic ATF used in place of the correct fluid is one of the primary causes of premature CVT failure. The ASX CVT has shown established failure patterns between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometres on cars with no fluid change history.
Mitsubishi's conventional 4-speed and 5-speed INVECS-II automatic transmissions fitted to older Outlander, Lancer and Galant models are significantly more reliable than the CVT units. Common faults include solenoid valve failure causing erratic or delayed shifts and torque converter shudder from fluid degradation. The 5-speed automatic can develop sudden reverse loss after a fluid change if the band anchor stud is disturbed during the service, this is a known and repairable fault, not a gearbox failure.
We repair all Mitsubishi automatic transmission types. Every CVT rebuild includes Mitsubishi DIA Queen CVT J4 fluid and a full fluid and filter change as standard. All repairs come with a 12-month guarantee and we offer 0% finance to spread the cost.

Mitsubishi Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Mitsubishi Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
INVECS-III CVT: The Mitsubishi INVECS-III CVT is a Jatco-supplied continuously variable transmission fitted to the Outlander, ASX, Eclipse Cross, Colt and Mirage. It uses a steel belt and variable-diameter pulleys to deliver smooth, stepless acceleration. Mitsubishi recalled over 80,000 Outlander and Lancer vehicles in 2016 for CVT delayed acceleration caused by hydraulic pressure circuit contamination. Belt and pulley wear causing slipping and surging, shuddering during acceleration, overheating under sustained load, a whining or rattling noise and in some cases complete loss of drive are all commonly reported. CVT fluid should be changed every 40,000 miles using Mitsubishi DIA Queen CVT J4 fluid only.
-
INVECS-II 4-Speed and 5-Speed Automatic: The Mitsubishi INVECS-II 4-speed and 5-speed automatic transmissions are fitted to older Outlander, Lancer, Galant and Colt models. These are significantly more reliable than the CVT units and can last well beyond 150,000 miles when maintained correctly. Common faults include solenoid valve failure causing erratic or delayed shifts, torque converter shudder and fluid degradation. Reverse loss can occur on the 5-speed unit after a fluid change if the band anchor stud is disturbed during the service. A full diagnostic confirms the exact fault before any parts are ordered.
-
Manual Gearbox: Mitsubishi manual gearboxes are fitted across the full range from the Colt and Mirage to the Outlander and Eclipse Cross. The Eclipse Cross manual gearbox has a documented fault where 2nd gear is difficult or impossible to select, particularly on cold starts. Mitsubishi acknowledged the issue and replaced some units under warranty. Other common faults include synchromesh wear, oil leaks and selector cable faults. Most Mitsubishi manual gearbox issues can be repaired without a full replacement.
The Functionality of Mitsubishi Gearboxes
-
INVECS-III CVT Operation: The Mitsubishi INVECS-III CVT uses a steel belt running between two variable-diameter pulleys to deliver smooth, stepless acceleration across a continuous range of gear ratios. Unlike a conventional automatic with fixed gear steps, the CVT adjusts the ratio continuously to keep the engine at the most efficient speed for the driving conditions. In fully automatic mode the system manages ratio selection without driver input. Paddle shifters on Outlander and ASX models allow the driver to select from six simulated fixed gear ratios in manual mode, giving a more conventional automatic feel when preferred. The CVT's smooth power delivery is a genuine comfort advantage over conventional automatics in urban stop-start driving when the unit is in good mechanical condition.
-
Fuel Efficiency: The INVECS-III CVT delivers real efficiency advantages over conventional automatics by keeping the engine at its optimal RPM for any given road speed and load. Mitsubishi rates the CVT-equipped Outlander and ASX as returning better official fuel economy than equivalent models with conventional automatics, and real-world figures support this in steady-speed driving. The efficiency advantage is most apparent at motorway cruising speeds where the CVT can select a very high effective ratio and drop engine speed to the point where the engine is barely working. The efficiency advantage narrows in urban driving where the CVT's hydraulic pressure circuit is more active and belt slip under hard acceleration is more likely.
-
INVECS-II Automatic Operation: The older INVECS-II 4-speed and 5-speed automatic transmissions fitted to earlier Outlander, Lancer and Galant models use a conventional torque converter and planetary gear sets. These are significantly more mechanically straightforward than the CVT and have a strong long-term reliability record when fluid changes are carried out at the recommended intervals. The Tiptronic function on INVECS-II models allows the driver to hold or change gears manually via the gear lever in a gate pattern alongside the automatic mode. These are among the most robust Mitsubishi transmissions produced and most examples with no fluid change history still respond well to a full ATF service and solenoid clean.
-
AWD Integration: Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD and S-AWC systems on Outlander, Shogun and Pajero models integrate the gearbox with the transfer case and rear differential to distribute torque across all four wheels. In 2WD mode the rear axle is disconnected entirely. In 4WD Auto the system monitors wheel slip and distributes torque to the rear as needed. In 4WD Lock it splits drive equally front and rear for maximum traction. The gearbox and transfer case are mechanically separate but share fluid systems that require coordinated servicing. A fault in either system can trigger warning lights that are sometimes misdiagnosed as gearbox faults when the actual cause is in the transfer case.
-
Outlander PHEV Electric Integration: The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses a twin-motor electric drive system rather than a conventional automatic gearbox. In most driving modes it is propelled by the electric motors alone or in combination with the petrol engine acting as a generator. A clutch connects the petrol engine directly to the rear axle for direct drive at higher motorway speeds. The system does not use a traditional gearbox and does not develop the same fault patterns as the CVT Outlander. PHEV Outlander powertrain faults are typically related to the high-voltage system, inverter or coupling clutch rather than a conventional gearbox fault.

Can a Mitsubishi CVT be repaired or does it need replacing?
In many cases it can be repaired without full replacement. Belt and pulley repair, hydraulic pressure circuit cleaning and a full fluid service resolve many CVT faults. A full rebuild or replacement is recommended when internal debris damage is extensive. We carry out a full diagnostic before recommending any work.
What fluid does the Mitsubishi CVT need?
Mitsubishi DIA Queen CVT J4 fluid. Using incorrect fluid is one of the primary causes of belt slip, overheating and premature failure on Outlander, ASX and Eclipse Cross CVT models. The fluid should be changed every 40,000 miles.
Do you repair Mitsubishi automatic gearboxes as well as CVT?
Yes. We repair all Mitsubishi transmission types including INVECS-III CVT, INVECS-II 4-speed and 5-speed automatic and manual gearboxes across all models including the Outlander, ASX, Eclipse Cross, Lancer, Colt, Pajero and L200.
What is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2nd gear problem?
The Eclipse Cross manual gearbox has a documented difficulty selecting 2nd gear, particularly on cold starts. The resistance is significant enough in some cases that the gear cannot be selected without force. Mitsubishi acknowledged the issue and replaced some gearboxes under warranty. We diagnose and repair this fault across all Eclipse Cross variants.
How much does a Mitsubishi CVT repair cost?
A fluid service costs considerably less than a full CVT rebuild or replacement. After a full diagnostic we give you a clear cost breakdown before any work begins. All our Mitsubishi gearbox repairs are priced well below main dealer rates and we offer 0% finance to spread the cost.
Do Mitsubishi gearbox repairs come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every Mitsubishi gearbox repair and rebuild at Service4Service comes with a 12-month guarantee on parts and labour. We use OEM-approved parts and Mitsubishi-approved fluids only.
