Automatic gearbox specialists

Having an issue with your dual-clutch gearbox?

Low-speed shudder, jerky shifts or limp mode. Dual-clutch faults do not bed in.

  • Judder pulling away, or a snatch between gears?
  • A DSG, Powershift, PDK or S tronic warning light?
  • Told you need a new gearbox before anyone has diagnosed it?

A dual-clutch gearbox uses two clutches and no pedal. When it shudders or goes into limp mode, that is gearbox work. Clutch pack replacement on these units is core work at Service4Service.

Keep driving a juddering dual-clutch and you can contaminate the gearbox. Call while it still moves.

What is a dual-clutch gearbox?

A dual-clutch gearbox, often called a DCT, uses two clutch packs inside the unit. One handles odd gears, the other even. The next gear is pre-selected, so the change is quick. There is no clutch pedal.

DSG is the VW Group name. Audi uses S tronic. Ford uses Powershift. Porsche PDK and the Renault EDC gearbox follow the same layout.

It is not a conventional automatic gearbox. A dual-clutch fault is often described as a clutch problem. The clutches sit inside the gearbox, so the repair is gearbox work.

Dual-clutch judder does not go away

Low-speed shudder, a bite that comes in with a bang, or limp mode will not polish out. Worn clutch packs glaze, overheat and drop debris into the oil. Leave it and a clutch job can become a mechatronic or full unit repair.

Dual-clutch symptoms people search

If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.

Low-speed shudder

Take-off shake in first or reverse. Classic worn dual-clutch packs, especially in traffic.

Jerky or snatchy shifts

The next clutch is taking up too harshly. Adaptation can be part of the fix. Worn packs are often the cause.

Limp mode

The mechatronic has given up on a clean shift. You may get one gear only. Do not keep using it as normal.

Burning smell or flare

Heat from slip. The friction material is past its best.

Warning light or fault codes

Clutch limit, pressure or mechatronic codes. Read them before anyone quotes a new gearbox.

No odd or no even gears

One of the two clutches has failed. The car may still crawl on the other. It will not last.

How a dual-clutch gearbox works

Two wet or dry clutches sit on the input. The mechatronic unit applies them in turn. Odd and even gears live on separate shafts, which is why a failed clutch can knock out every other gear.

After clutch packs are replaced the unit needs adaptation so it relearns the bite. Skip that and the judder can come straight back.

1

One clutch drives

Odd or even gears, depending which pack is clamped.

2

The other pre-selects

The next ratio is already waiting. The change is a hand-over, not a pause.

3

Wear shows as shudder

The bite gets harsh or late. Heat follows. It only gets worse.

Dual-clutch work we do every day

Clutch packs inside a DSG, Powershift, PDK, S tronic or other DCT are our job. We diagnose first, replace the packs when that is the fault, repair the mechatronic if that is the fault, then adapt the unit.

  • DSG, Powershift, PDK, S tronic and other DCT clutch packs
  • Mechatronic repair when the control unit is at fault
  • Adaptation after clutch replacement
  • Diagnosis so you are not sold a whole gearbox for a clutch pack job
  • Collection in limp mode

Still driving a juddering dual-clutch?

Shudder at low speed is the unit asking for help. That is automatic gearbox repair. Call before the packs take the rest of the gearbox with them.

FAQs

Straight answers from a transmission specialist.

No. Two clutches sit inside the gearbox and the unit operates them. From the driver's seat it can feel like an automatic. Mechanically it is closer to a manual with two clutches and no pedal.

Worn clutch packs are the usual cause, especially in stop-start traffic. A mechatronic fault or skipped adaptation can feel the same. Diagnosis tells you which.

On many DCT, DSG and Powershift units, yes, without a whole new gearbox. The unit then needs adaptation. That is specialist work.

Same idea, different maker. Two clutches, no pedal, pre-selected gears. Faults and repairs follow the same logic.

You can crawl to a safe place. You should not keep using the car. Limp mode is the gearbox protecting itself. Ignore it and the next fault is usually bigger.

No. Dual-clutch and automatic work is what we do. A dual-clutch is not a manual, even though it uses clutches.
