What is sport mode vs eco mode?
Eco holds higher gears and earlier lock-up to save fuel. Sport holds revs and downshifts sooner. Both are maps in the transmission control unit, sitting on the same automatic gearbox hardware.
On a dual-clutch the maps change how aggressively the clutch packs apply. On a conventional auto they change solenoid timing.
If every gear positions option feels the same and awful, you have a fault, not a preference.
A harsh map is not an excuse for a slamming gearbox
Sport should be keen, not violent. Eco should be lazy, not slipping. If both bang or both flare, the packs, the body or the control are wrong. Keep using it and you glaze the hardware.
Mode symptoms people search
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Stuck in sport
A button, a network fault, or limp.
Eco feels like slip
It may be slip. Diagnose.
Bang in every mode
Not a map. Hardware.
Mode button dead
Switch, TCU or a dash network.
Fine in Drive, awful in sport
Sometimes a learn. Sometimes a pack that only shows under load.
After a battery, maps feel random
Adaptation.
How the maps work
The TCU picks shift points from a table. adaptation trims those tables. A failed speed sensor can make every map look insane.
lock-up in eco can shudder if the converter clutch is tired. That is not eco being 'efficient'.
You pick a mode
The TCU loads a map.
Shifts should match that map
Keen, or lazy, not broken.
If every map slams
Hardware. It only gets worse.
Mode and map work we do
We split a stuck button from a genuine gearbox fault, then repair the automatic if sport and eco are both covering up slip or slam.
- Map versus hardware diagnosis
- Stuck mode and network faults
- Shudder in eco lock-up
- Adaptation after control work

Every mode feels like a fault?
Then it is a fault. That is automatic gearbox repair. Call before limp mode decides the map for you.

Used as intended, no. Using sport to mask a slip, or ignoring a bang in sport, is bad.
Often lock-up clutch. Diagnose the converter, not the button.
Software can help shift quality. It will not glue friction material back on.
It should feel keener. It should not kick you in the back.
No.
No. You are slamming the packs on purpose.
