What is a remanufactured gearbox?
Remanufactured, done properly, means the automatic gearbox is built back to a written spec: clutch packs, gearbox bearing, seals, and inspected gear sets. That is closer to a full rebuild than to a used reconditioned gearbox.
Your own gearbox, opened after a diagnostic check, can be remanufactured or rebuilt in house. A swap is not automatically better.
Fix the transmission cooler and the cause. A beautiful reman behind a leaking radiator will die the same death.
A remanufactured unit still fails if the cause is left in the car
Coolant in the oil, a blocked cooler, a missed TCU update or a pump that was never checked will take the next gearbox too. We do not bolt a reman on and hope.
When remanufacture is in the conversation
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Multiple packs burnt, gear set still good
A spec rebuild or reman of your unit.
Metal through the pump
More than a valve body.
No Drive after a bang
Strip and measure. Then decide.
Quoted reman with no process
Ask for the parts list.
Dual-clutch, only packs worn
Often not a reman of the whole box.
Repeat failure on a used unit
Process and cause, not another lucky dip.
How a proper reman differs
Parts are measured against limits. Wear items are replaced because the process says so, not because they looked 'ok-ish'.
adaptation after fitment is part of the job on modern automatics.
Diagnose and strip
Know what actually failed.
Measure and replace to a spec
Not a wash and a prayer.
Refit, adapt, road test
And fix the cooler if that killed the last one.
Reman and rebuild work we do
We remanufacture or rebuild automatics when that is the honest job, and we repair them when it is not. The label on the quote has to match the work.
- Diagnosis before any reman talk
- Measured internals, not vague labels
- Cause of failure fixed in the car
- Adaptation and test after fitment

Been quoted a reman without a diagnosis?
Start with the unit in the car. If it is finished, we will say so. If it is a pack or a body, that is automatic gearbox repair. Call.

It should be, if the process is real. Ask what was measured.
Only if yours is beyond an honest repair. Many are not.
Often yes, plus adaptation.
Read the warranty. Ours is 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labour for the work we do.
No.
Yes, though many only need packs or a mechatronic.

If you have been quoted a reman, tell us the symptoms. We will diagnose yours and only talk remanufacture if that is honest.
