What is a Multitronic gearbox?

Multitronic is an Audi CVT. Continuously variable ratio, no fixed gears, no clutch pedal. It is still an automatic gearbox from the seat.

It is not a DSG and it is not a Tiptronic torque converter auto. Wrong diagnosis is how people buy the wrong parts.

Once the belt has glazed the pulleys, the job is usually much bigger than a fluid change.

Multitronic flare does not go away

A rise in revs with little speed, a burnt smell or limp mode will not polish out. Heat kills CVT cones. Leave it and you can be left with no Drive.

Multitronic symptoms people search

If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.

Flare on take-off

Revs rise, the car lags. Belt slip.

Drone then smell

Heat. Do not keep using it.

Jerk or shunt

Not the usual CVT smoothness.

Overheating warning

The unit is protecting the belt.

Limp mode

Crawl to a safe place. Do not commute in it.

Whine

Bearing or belt. It usually gets louder.

How Multitronic works

Two cones and a chain or belt. Pressure holds the belt. The transmission control unit varies that pressure. Wrong automatic transmission fluid is a common failure route.

A transmission cooler fault cooks these units. Heat is the enemy.

1

The belt rides the cones

Ratio varies smoothly.

2

Pressure keeps it gripping

No pressure, it slips.

3

Slip scores the pulleys

It only gets worse.
