Is the gearbox warning light on?

A transmission lamp, a cog, or a 'gearbox service required' message. That is not a maybe. The unit has stored a fault.

  • A yellow cog or transmission symbol on the dash?
  • Gearbox malfunction or service-required message?
  • The light came on with a bang, limp or no Drive?

A gearbox warning light means the control unit has seen a fault. Codes, limp mode or a sensor. Clearing it is not a repair. That diagnosis is core work at Service4Service.

The light can go out. The fault is still there. It usually comes back hot.

What does a gearbox warning light mean?

Quick answer

A gearbox or transmission warning light means the transmission control unit has detected a fault or a condition it wants checked, such as overheating, a sensor error or low pressure. Messages vary by make, and the light may come with limp mode. The wording is not a diagnosis, so the fault codes and live data need reading.

The lamp is the transmission control unit asking for a scan. It may sit with limp mode, slipping, harsh shifts or stored fault codes such as P0700.

Messages vary: gearbox malfunction, transmission service required, or a plain cog. The wording is not the diagnosis. A diagnostic check is.

Volkswagen DSG, Audi S tronic and Ford Powershift are vocal on the dash. BMW often uses a transmission message rather than a simple bulb. Same job: read it properly.

Key facts
  • May show a cog symbol, a gear icon or a text message
  • Can accompany limp mode, slip or harsh shifts
  • The light may go out while the fault code stays stored
  • Disconnecting the battery may clear the lamp but not the cause

A warning light is the unit asking you to stop guessing

Keep driving with the lamp on and you can turn a sensor or a solenoid into burnt packs. If it is in limp, crawl to safety. Do not treat one gear as a journey.

Warning-light symptoms people search

If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.

Cog or transmission lamp

Scan the gearbox module, not only the engine.

Service required message

Often a stored fault, not a routine service.

Light with limp mode

Protection is already on.

Light with no driveability change

Still a fault. Intermittent comes back.

Light after a pothole

A knocked plug or a sensor.

Light after a fluid change

Level, spec or a basic setting missed.

What happens when the light comes on

The TCU sets a code and may limit gears. A generic engine-light tool often misses gearbox modules. That is why people get told there are no codes.

We read freeze-frame, live data and the oil. Then we say if it is a speed sensor, a solenoid or something bigger.

1

The computer sees a fault

A code is stored.

2

The lamp comes on

Limp may follow.

3

Clearing it is not a repair

The fault returns. It only gets worse.

Warning-light work we do

We scan automatic and dual-clutch modules, road test with data, and repair the cause. We will not sell a gearbox because a cog lit up.

  • Gearbox-module scan, not a generic plug-in
  • Live data and freeze-frame
  • Sensor versus unit faults
  • A conclusion you can act on

FAQs

Straight answers from a transmission specialist.

If it still shifts, keep it gentle and get it scanned. If it is in limp, crawl and call.

No. Intermittent faults return, usually hot.

Sometimes it is a service interval. Often it is a stored fault. Scan it.

They read the engine. The gearbox module is separate.

No. Automatic and dual-clutch lamps are the work.

It might hide it. It will not fix it.

It means the transmission control unit has recorded a fault or an out-of-range condition, such as overheating, a faulty sensor or solenoid, or incorrect pressure. The exact meaning depends on the stored fault codes, which a diagnostic scan reads.

A scan tool or battery disconnection can clear the lamp, but the fault will usually return and the cause remains. Clearing it also removes useful evidence, so it is better to have the codes read and recorded before anything is reset.

No. They are separate warnings, though a gearbox fault can sometimes trigger the engine light too. A gearbox light points at the transmission system, so diagnosis should use a tool that can read the gearbox control module.
