What is a gearbox shudder or judder?
Judder is a shake when drive takes up. On a dual-clutch it is usually the clutch packs taking up unevenly, especially in traffic. On a conventional automatic gearbox it can be a lock-up clutch inside the torque converter.
People search gearbox shudder, clutch judder and DSG judder for the same feeling. The hardware differs. The honest next step is a diagnostic check.
Judder does not bed in
A shake on take-off or at cruise will not smooth out on a long run. Friction material that is glazing only glazes more. Leave it and a clutch or converter job can become a full unit repair.
Judder people search
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Take-off judder
Shake in first or reverse. Classic dual-clutch pack wear, or a worn converter.
Low-speed shudder
Stop-start traffic makes it worse. Heat follows.
Shudder at cruise
Often torque converter lock-up, not a wheel balance.
Worse when hot
The oil thins, the clutch slips more. Do not wait for a cold day to hide it.
Bang then shake
A harsh take-up then chatter. Adaptation will not save worn friction.
Limp mode after judder
The unit has had enough. Crawl to a safe place.
What causes gearbox judder
Uneven friction. Worn clutch plates, a glazed converter lock-up, contaminated oil or a mechatronic that applies the clutch too harshly.
A automatic gearbox service with the right fluid can ease a mild lock-up chatter. It will not restore a packed-out dual-clutch.
Drive takes up
The clutch or converter should clamp smoothly.
Worn friction chatters
You feel it in the seat or the pedal area, with no pedal on a dual-clutch.
Heat makes it worse
Keep driving and the next fault is bigger.

No. Worn friction does not heal. A reset or a run on the motorway is not a repair.
On a dual-clutch, often yes. On a conventional automatic it can be lock-up. Diagnosis tells you which.
You can, briefly. You should not. Heat from chatter spreads the damage.
Mounts can shake. Gearbox judder is tied to take-up or lock-up. A test separates them.
No. Automatic and dual-clutch judder is the work we do.
Sometimes we will. Often the packs or converter are already worn. We will tell you which.
