Having a gearbox oil pump issue?

Delayed Drive that is worse from cold, or no Drive at all. A weak pump does not recover with miles.

  • A long pause into Drive, then a bang?
  • No Drive when hot, engine still fine?
  • Whine from the bellhousing that rises with revs?

The gearbox oil pump is how an automatic makes pressure. No pump, no Drive. A worn pump looks like a failed gearbox. Pump diagnosis is core work at Service4Service.

A car that takes longer and longer to find Drive is running out of pressure. Call while it still moves.

What is a gearbox oil pump?

The oil pump sits at the front of a conventional automatic gearbox, driven by the torque converter. It feeds the valve body so clutch packs can clamp.

A gearbox filter protects it. Debris from burnt packs can take the pump with them.

Low pressure from a pump is not a solenoid on its own. A diagnostic check with pressure tests splits them.

A weak pump will leave you with no Drive

Cold delay that becomes hot delay, then nothing, is a classic pressure death. Keep launching it and you glaze the packs the pump can no longer apply.

Pump symptoms people search

If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.

Delayed Drive from cold

Pump wear or thick, tired oil.

No Drive when hot

Clearances grow. Pressure collapses.

Whine with engine speed

Pump or converter area.

All gears feel soft

Line pressure, not one pack.

After a failed clutch job

Debris through the pump.

Warning then limp

The TCU has seen the pressure drop.

How a gearbox oil pump works

The converter hub turns the pump. automatic transmission fluid is drawn through the filter and sent to the body. A blocked transmission cooler can raise pressure and heat until something gives.

Scoring on the pump faces is often the first hard evidence after a burnt-pack failure.

1

The converter drives the pump

Oil pressure rises.

2

Wear or debris cuts that pressure

Drive is late.

3

Pressure collapses

No Drive. It only gets worse.

FAQs

Straight answers from a transmission specialist.

Sometimes. If debris has gone through the unit, a pump alone is not honest. We will say which.

No. Valve body, fluid level and packs can mimic it. Test first.

They have hydraulic pumps. Layout differs. Diagnosis still starts with pressure and codes.

If the oil is thick and neglected, it can help a mild case. A scored pump will not heal.

No.

No. The bang that follows is harder on the packs.
