What is a gearbox flush vs a fluid change?
A fluid change is a controlled drain and fill of automatic transmission fluid, usually with the gearbox filter if the pan comes off. That is the core of an automatic gearbox service.
A flush uses a machine or a chemical cycle to push more of the old oil out, including the transmission cooler and the torque converter. It can leave varnish and debris somewhere worse than the pan.
Neither job replaces a diagnostic check if Drive already flares.
Flushing a failing automatic can finish it off
Detergent and high flow can lift clutch material and dump it into valves. A car that arrived slipping can leave with no Drive. If the oil is burnt, we inspect. We do not blast it.
When people get sold the wrong job
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Slipping, then offered a flush
Wrong. Diagnose.
Healthy car, overdue oil
A proper service, not a chemical surprise.
Flush, no filter change
Half a job, sometimes a harmful one.
Worse the next day
Debris has moved. Stop.
CVT sold a generic flush
Wrong spec and a high risk.
No pan inspection
You never saw what was in there.
How we decide
If the unit shifts well and the oil is tired, we service it properly. If the oil is burnt or the pan is loaded, we diagnose the hardware.
A valve body repair or a pack repair is not a flush with extra steps. They are different jobs.
Check how it drives and how the oil looks
Service or diagnosis, not a default flush.
Drop the pan if the unit allows
See the debris.
Fill to spec and test
If it needed a rebuild, we say so.
How we handle fluid work
Correct spec, filter where fitted, pan inspection, and an honest no to flushing a packed-out gearbox.
- Service versus flush, explained
- No flush on a slipping unit
- Filter and pan, not a mystery machine
- Diagnostic if the oil is already burnt

Been offered a flush for a slipping auto?
Ask for a diagnostic instead. If the unit is failing, that is automatic gearbox repair, not a flush. Call.
Why this work comes to Service4Service

Repairs are backed by a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty on parts and labour. See Payment Options for ways to pay.
On some healthy units, a controlled exchange can be discussed. It is not our default on a fault.
Debris moved into valves, or the remaining friction needed the old oil's thickness. Either way, stop.
No. A converter holds oil. That is still not a reason to blast a failing unit.
Dual-clutch units need the correct procedure and spec. A generic engine-style flush is the wrong idea.
No.
Do not repeat it. Book a diagnostic. The unit may need more than fluid.
