What is a gearbox filter?
Most conventional automatics have a filter in the pan or in the automatic transmission fluid circuit. Oil from the sump goes through it into the gearbox oil pump.
A automatic gearbox service should replace it with the fluid on units that allow it. A gearbox flush that leaves a clogged filter in place is not a service.
Dual-clutch and CVT filters differ. The idea is the same: dirty oil and a blocked mesh starve the hydraulics.
A blocked filter starves the gearbox of pressure
Soft Drive, flare and a pump that whines are how a clogged filter shows. Keep going and you can collapse the pump. If the pan is full of clutch material, the filter is the messenger, not the cause.
Filter symptoms people search
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Delayed Drive after neglected service
The mesh is tired or blocked.
Debris in the pan
Packs have shed. Filter change alone is not enough.
Whine that eases after a fluid change
Starvation, then a brief recovery.
No filter in years
Varnish plus a loaded mesh.
After a flush, worse than before
Debris moved, filter still clogged.
Cooler lines blowing residue
The circuit is full of material.
How a gearbox filter works
It is a mesh or felt that protects the pump. The transmission cooler circuit can have its own screen. Both matter.
If the valve body is already varnished, a new filter will not free stuck valves.
Oil is drawn through the filter
The pump stays clean.
Debris loads the mesh
Pressure falls.
Starvation shows as delay
Then pump damage. It only gets worse.
Filter work we do
We drop pans, assess debris, replace filters with the correct fluid, and we will say when the mess in the pan means a bigger repair.
- Pan inspection, not a blind filter swap
- Correct filter and fluid spec
- Honest split between service and repair
- Collection when Drive is already soft

Skipped the gearbox service?
A blocked filter is how neglect shows up. If Drive is already late, that is automatic gearbox repair as well as a service. Call.
Why this work comes to Service4Service
- Automatic and dual-clutch work is core work, not a sideline
- Diagnosis before parts
- Collection when the car should not be driven
- 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labour
Guarantee and payment
Repairs are backed by a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty on parts and labour. See Payment Options for ways to pay.
It is part of a proper service on many automatics. Fluid only, filter left in, is a half job.
Often no. Some units have an external cartridge. We will identify yours.
Not always. Quantity and type of debris matter. We inspect, then say.
Usually yes, and they are fussy about it.
No.
No. Change the filter and assess the debris. Flushing a packed-out unit can make it worse.

If Drive is soft or the service was skipped, tell us. We will look at the filter and at what it has been catching.
