What are gearbox bearings and shafts?
Shafts carry the planetary gear set and the output. Bearings hold those shafts true. A conventional automatic gearbox and a dual-clutch both rely on them. A CVT has pulley bearings that fail in their own way.
A speed sensor can be wiped by bearing debris. Noise first, codes later.
A diagnostic check plus an oil inspection is how we split a bearing from a tyre or a differential.
A bearing howl can take the gearbox with it
Whine becomes rumble becomes a bang. Keep motorwaying it and a shaft can walk. Stop while the car still drives in a straight line.
Bearing and shaft symptoms people search
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Whine with road speed
Classic bearing or gear noise.
Rumble on overrun
A bearing that is already loose.
Noise in one gear only
That shaft or that set.
Vibration through the lever
A shaft that is no longer true.
Metal on the magnet
Do not treat that as a service-only job.
Then a bang and no Drive
The bearing has given up.
How bearings and shafts fail
Oil starvation, age and debris from clutch packs all score bearings. A tired gearbox oil pump can starve them.
Once a bearing collapses, the rebuild versus replacement question is honest, not a filter change.
A bearing starts to pit
You hear a whine.
Play grows
Rumble, then metal in the oil.
The shaft walks
Noise becomes no Drive. It only gets worse.
Bearing and shaft work we do
We diagnose noise, inspect oil and, when the unit is opened, assess bearings and shafts as part of an automatic repair or rebuild.
- Noise and oil diagnosis
- Strip inspection when honest
- Rebuild versus replacement advice
- Collection when it should not be driven

Still driving with a gearbox howl?
A new automatic noise is not a wheel bearing until it is checked. That is automatic gearbox repair. Call before a shaft walks.
Why this work comes to Service4Service
- Automatic and dual-clutch work is core work, not a sideline
- Diagnosis before parts
- Collection when the car should not be driven
- 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labour
Guarantee and payment
Repairs are backed by a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty on parts and labour. See Payment Options for ways to pay.
No. Gears, the pump and the converter can all sing. Diagnosis first.
If we are in the unit, we assess all of them. One failed bearing often means others are close.
No. That hides nothing and can starve the hydraulics.
Yes. Input shaft bearings are a known noise on some.
No.
No. Rumble is late.
