What is a flexplate?
A flexplate is the automatic's flywheel. It carries the starter ring gear and bolts to the torque converter. It is not a dual-mass flywheel, which belongs with a pedal clutch.
On a conventional automatic gearbox a cracked plate can knock like a failed mount or a converter. A diagnostic check and a look behind the bellhousing settle it.
Dual-clutch cars are a different layout. Do not order a flexplate for a dual-clutch without confirming the hardware.
A cracked flexplate can leave you with no start
The knock gets louder, the starter ring can shed teeth, then the engine will not crank. Leave it and you can damage the converter or the crank sensor reading.
Flexplate symptoms people search
If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.
Knock on Drive or Reverse
A crack opening under load.
Starter click or no crank
Ring gear damage.
Vibration at idle in Drive
A bent or cracked plate.
Metal around the bellhousing
Do not keep starting it.
Confused with a DMF rattle
Wrong part if the car is an automatic.
After a converter job
Bolts must be torqued. A miss here cracks plates.
How a flexplate works
The engine turns the plate. The plate turns the converter. The converter then drives the planetary gear set through fluid.
Cracks start at the bolt circle or the ring gear weld. Heat and a seized converter make that worse.
The engine turns the plate
The converter takes up the drive.
A crack opens under load
You hear a knock in Drive.
The ring gear or plate fails
No start, or worse. It only gets worse.
Flexplate work we do
We diagnose knock versus converter versus engine mount, then replace a cracked flexplate as part of automatic repair when that is the fault.
- Knock versus converter diagnosis
- Flexplate replacement with converter work
- Starter ring inspection
- Collection if it may not restart

Still knocking into Drive?
A bang that is not a shift can be the plate. That is automatic gearbox repair. Call before the starter stops catching.

No. A flexplate is the automatic part. A dual-mass is a manual clutch part. We do not do manual DMF kits.
The converter usually has to come off. We inspect both.
If the converter is seized or the bolts were wrong, yes. We check the cause.
Layouts differ. Some use a dual-mass style damper. Confirm the car.
No.
