Automatic gearbox specialists

Having an automatic transmission fluid issue?

Dark oil, a burnt smell, or a service interval that was skipped. Dirty ATF does not clean itself.

  • Fluid that looks black or smells burnt?
  • A skip in the service history and now it slams?
  • Told a flush will fix a gearbox that is already slipping?

Automatic transmission fluid is the oil that cools, lubricates and applies the clutch packs. When it burns, the gearbox slips and slams. Fluid condition is part of every automatic diagnosis at Service4Service.

A flush will not save burnt clutch packs. Smell the oil before anyone sells a miracle clean.

What is automatic transmission fluid?

Automatic transmission fluid, or ATF, is the hydraulic oil in a conventional automatic gearbox. The gearbox oil pump pressurises it. The valve body directs it. Packs clamp because of it.

A dual-clutch and a CVT often use their own spec. The wrong bottle is a common way to wreck a unit.

A scheduled automatic gearbox service is not the same as a gearbox flush. And neither is a repair if the packs are already burnt.

Burnt fluid means the damage has already started

Dark, burnt ATF is friction material and heat. Keep driving and you varnish the valve body and glaze the packs. A colour change is not a later problem. It is the problem now.

Fluid symptoms people search

If any of these sound like your car, do not wait for it to fail on the road.

Burnt smell

Clutch material in the oil. Diagnose, do not just refill.

Black on the dipstick

Overdue service or internal wear.

Pink and milky

Cooler leak into coolant. Stop.

Low level

Slip, delay, then no Drive.

Foaming

Overfill or air in the pump.

Smooth after a top-up, then worse

You have not fixed the leak or the wear.

How ATF works

It is hydraulic fluid, lubricant and coolant. The transmission cooler and the gearbox filter keep it in range. Skip those and varnish follows.

Wrong spec oil can make a healthy ZF gearbox or dual-clutch shudder. Spec matters more than colour on a fresh bottle.

1

The pump pressurises the oil

Packs can clamp.

2

Heat and debris dirty it

Valves stick. Friction fades.

3

Burnt oil shows as slip

A service may help. A rebuild may be honest. It only gets worse.

Fluid work we do

We assess condition, spec and leaks, then service or diagnose. We will not sell a flush as a cure for a packed-out gearbox.

  • Correct spec for the unit
  • Service versus flush, honestly split
  • Leak, cooler and filter checks
  • Diagnosis when the oil is already burnt

FAQs

Straight answers from a transmission specialist.

No. Use the spec for that gearbox. A dual-clutch, a CVT and a ZF 8HP are not the same bottle.

Follow the manufacturer for that unit. Lifetime fill is marketing. Heat still ages oil.

Not if the packs are worn. Flushing a failing unit can make it worse.

Yes. Brown and burnt is overdue diagnosis.

No. This page is automatic fluid.

If the level is dropping, yes. Low ATF is how automatics lose Drive.
