What are automatic gear modes?
On a conventional automatic gearbox, P R N D are hydraulic and electronic positions. Park locks the output. Drive asks the transmission control unit to apply clutch packs through the valve body.
Tiptronic and other semi-automatic gates are still the same automatic. A dual-clutch uses the same letters with two clutches and no pedal.
sport mode changes shift maps. It does not fix a worn pack.
A selector fault can leave you with no Park
If Park will not lock, the car can roll. If Drive will not apply, you are going nowhere. Either way, do not keep cycling the lever. You can damage the selector and the packs.

How automatic modes work
The lever or a by-wire shifter tells the TCU. Hydraulics then apply a pack, or Park engages a pawl. limp mode often locks you out of the extra modes.
After selector or mechatronic work the car may need adaptation.
You select a mode
The TCU is asked to apply it.
Hydraulics or the pawl respond
Drive, Reverse or Park happens.
A mismatch shows on the dash
Do not keep cycling it. It only gets worse.
