Bentley Gearbox Repair & Rebuild Specialists
ZF 8-Speed Automatic, DQ500 DCT, Older ZF 6-Speed All Models Covered, All Repairs Guaranteed

Continental GT, Flying Spur, Bentayga, Mulsanne
The ZF 8HP fitted to all modern Bentley models handles torques exceeding 900Nm and is built to Bentley's own specification beyond the standard ZF unit. It is durable when fluid is changed at the recommended 80,000 kilometre interval. When missed, solenoid valve contamination causes erratic shifts, clutch pack wear produces shuddering in traffic and seal failure leads to fluid leaks. We repair all ZF 8HP faults on Bentley models using ZF-approved ATF only.
Continental GT V8, Flying Spur V8
Third generation Continental GT V8 and Flying Spur V8 models use a Volkswagen Group DQ500 dual-clutch transmission with enhanced clutch pressures and oil cooling controls specifically for Bentley. It is more reliable than the same unit in Audi and Porsche applications but still develops clutch pack wear causing low-speed shuddering, valve body lag and solenoid contamination when service intervals are missed. We repair all DQ500 faults on Bentley models with a 12-month guarantee.
Arnage, Brooklands, Early Continental GT
Earlier Bentley models used ZF 6HP26 and 6HP32 six-speed automatics, among the most robust transmissions ever fitted to a production car. They develop torque converter clutch wear, solenoid contamination and seal failure at higher mileages when fluid is not changed. Most ZF 6HP faults on Bentley models can be resolved with targeted component work rather than a full gearbox rebuild or replacement.
We repair all Bentley automatic gearbox types. Every rebuild includes ZF-approved ATF and a full fluid and filter change as standard. Most Bentley automatic gearbox faults are repairable at significantly less than main dealer or authorised repairer replacement costs. We offer a 12-month guarantee on all parts and labour and 0% finance to spread the cost.
What's The Process?
Our repair centres are warranty ready and equipped with the correct diagnostic tools for Bentley automatic gearbox work. We cover the full spectrum of Bentley transmission repairs from targeted solenoid and valve body work through to full ZF 8HP and DQ500 rebuilds and reconditioned unit supply where required. All repairs use OEM-approved parts and ZF-approved ATF only.
Bentley Models We Rebuild & Repair
Types of Bentley Gearboxes We Repair & Rebuild
-
ZF 8-Speed Automatic: The ZF 8HP automatic is fitted to the Continental GT W12, Flying Spur, Bentayga and Mulsanne from 2010 onwards. Bentley engineers uprated the planetary gears, vane clutches and shift software beyond standard ZF specification to handle torques exceeding 900Nm. The unit is exceptionally durable when fluid is changed at Bentley's recommended 80,000 kilometre interval. When fluid is degraded or the interval is missed, solenoid valve contamination causes erratic shifts and valve body lag, clutch pack wear produces shuddering in stop-start traffic, and seal failure leads to fluid leaks. Bentley and ZF both use ZF-approved ATF only.
-
DQ500 Dual-Clutch DCT: The Volkswagen Group DQ500 dual-clutch transmission is fitted to the third generation Continental GT V8 and Flying Spur V8. It was modified specifically for Bentley with enhanced clutch pressure calibration and improved oil cooling controls compared to the Audi and Porsche applications of the same unit. The DQ500 in Bentley specification is more reliable than other VW Group DCT applications but develops clutch pack wear causing low-speed shuddering in traffic, valve body lag, solenoid faults and fluid contamination when service intervals are missed. Correct DCT fluid and change intervals are essential.
-
ZF 6-Speed Automatic: Earlier Bentley models including the Arnage R, Brooklands and first generation Continental GT used ZF 6HP26 and 6HP32 six-speed automatic transmissions. These are robust units designed for the extreme torque outputs of Bentley W12 engines. Common faults include torque converter clutch wear, solenoid valve contamination from degraded fluid and fluid leaks from worn seals. The ZF 6-speed in Bentley specification is one of the most reliable automatic transmissions ever fitted to a production car when maintained correctly.
The Functionality of Bentley Gearboxes
-
Imperceptible Gear Shifting: Bentley calibrates the ZF 8HP shift programme specifically for each model to deliver gear changes that are effectively imperceptible during normal driving. The Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga are tuned to prioritise refinement — the torque converter cushions power delivery during changes and the shift logic avoids sudden ratio jumps that would disturb the car's composure. When the fluid is clean and the solenoids are functioning correctly, the ZF 8HP in a Bentley is widely regarded as one of the smoothest shifting automatic transmissions available at any price point.
-
Handling Extreme Torque: Bentley's application of the ZF 8HP is engineered to a standard above the base unit. The planetary gears, vane clutches and shift software are all uprated to handle torques exceeding 900Nm from the W12 engine. Bentley tests the gearbox under repeated maximum-load conditions before fitting each unit undergoes individual quality testing beyond the standard ZF factory testing. This extra engineering margin is why Bentley automatics routinely last well beyond 400,000 kilometres in well-maintained cars, a longevity figure that the standard ZF 8HP does not match in all applications.
-
Dual Cooling System: Bentley uses a dual cooling circuit with active flow control on the ZF 8HP, rather than the single circuit used in most vehicles. This dual system responds to temperature and load, extending the life of the transmission oil and the components significantly compared to standard ZF applications. Separate hydraulic fluid filtration prevents micro-particle contamination of the valve body solenoids. This is one of the primary reasons why Bentley automatics develop solenoid and valve body faults later than the same unit in other vehicles but it does not eliminate the need for scheduled fluid changes, which Bentley sets at 80,000 kilometres.
-
DCT Performance Mode: The DQ500 dual-clutch transmission in Continental GT V8 and Flying Spur V8 models uses two clutches to pre-select the next gear before the current one is released, giving near-instantaneous gear changes under hard acceleration. Bentley tuned the DQ500's shift programme and clutch pressure calibration specifically for their application, providing a level of smoothness at low speeds that the same unit does not achieve in Audi or Porsche applications. In Sport mode the DCT holds gears to higher revs and responds more sharply to paddle inputs.
-
Driver Control: All Bentley automatic models offer manual gear selection via steering wheel paddles. In manual mode the gearbox holds the selected gear until the driver calls for the next ratio. In Sport mode the shift programme is sharpened significantly, holding gears longer and downshifting more aggressively on deceleration for a more responsive character. Bentley Drive Dynamics mode on equipped models adjusts the transmission programme alongside suspension, engine and steering settings to deliver a distinctly different character from Comfort through to Sport S+.

What automatic gearbox does my Bentley have?
Modern Bentley models from 2010 use the ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic, significantly uprated by Bentley engineers for torques exceeding 900Nm. The third generation Continental GT V8 and Flying Spur V8 use a Volkswagen Group DQ500 dual-clutch transmission modified specifically for Bentley. Earlier models including the Arnage, Brooklands and first generation Continental GT use ZF 6HP26 or 6HP32 six-speed automatics.
How often does a Bentley ZF gearbox need a fluid change?
Bentley recommends oil and filter changes every 80,000 kilometres. When this interval is missed, solenoid valve contamination, clutch pack wear and seal failure develop earlier than on maintained cars. ZF-approved ATF is the only fluid that should be used on Bentley ZF automatic gearboxes.
What are the most common Bentley gearbox faults?
The most reported Bentley automatic faults are low-speed shuddering and jerking caused by clutch pack wear or valve body lag, solenoid valve contamination from degraded fluid causing erratic shifts, and fluid leaks from worn seals. On DCT-equipped models the DQ500 develops clutch wear in stop-start traffic. On ZF 8-speed models the solenoid contamination is the primary fault.
Can a Bentley gearbox be repaired without replacing it?
Yes in most cases. Valve body servicing, solenoid replacement, clutch pack repair and a full fluid change resolve the majority of Bentley ZF and DQ500 faults without a full gearbox replacement. We carry out a full diagnostic before recommending any work.
How much does a Bentley gearbox repair cost?
The cost depends on the model and the specific fault. A solenoid replacement or fluid service costs significantly less than a full rebuild. After a full diagnostic we give you a clear cost breakdown before any work begins. We offer 0% finance to spread the cost.
Do Bentley gearbox repairs come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every Bentley gearbox repair and rebuild at Service4Service comes with a 12-month guarantee on parts and labour. We use OEM-approved parts and ZF-approved ATF only.
Can you collect my Bentley if it cannot be driven?
Yes. We offer nationwide vehicle recovery and collection across all Bentley models.
