We understand the warning signs

Does any of this sound familiar?

One symptom can have several possible causes. Our job is to identify the actual fault rather than guess which part needs replacing.

01

Jerking or harsh gear changes

The car jolts as it changes gear, especially at lower speeds or when pulling away.

Could involve: clutch packs, mechatronics, solenoids or transmission control.

02

Revs rising but little acceleration

The engine speeds up, but the car hesitates or the gearbox feels like it's slipping.

Could involve: clutch wear, hydraulic pressure, fluid or torque converter faults.

03

Gearbox warning light or limp mode

A dashboard message appears, or the vehicle restricts the gears it can use.

Could involve: sensors, electronics, valve body or internal issues.

04

Delay selecting Drive or Reverse

You select a gear and wait for the car to engage, sometimes with a sudden thump.

Could involve: pressure loss, worn components or gear-selection faults.

05

Shuddering, vibration or noises

Judder when setting off, a whining sound, clunking or an unfamiliar vibration.

Could involve: clutch assemblies, bearings or torque converter problems.

06

Won't go into gear or has lost drive

The car won't move, stays in one gear or refuses to engage a gear altogether.

Could involve: controls, hydraulic faults or mechanical failure.

These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. If the car loses drive or behaves unsafely, stop driving and ask about recovery.

The difference is in the diagnosis

Don't guess the fault. Find it.

One symptom can point to several different problems. That's why the right advice starts with understanding what your car is actually doing.

Gearbox under specialist inspection

A gearbox warning light, slipping gear or harsh change can have very different causes. What matters is finding the right one, before deciding what needs repairing.

The right repair starts with the right diagnosis

A gearbox problem doesn't always mean a new gearbox.

Being told you need a complete replacement can be worrying, especially when you haven't been shown what's actually failed.

Depending on the fault, an individual component may be repairable. If a rebuild or replacement is needed, we'll explain why and provide a quotation for you to consider.

Specialist fault-finding

Electronic diagnostics, fluid checks and mechanical assessment as appropriate.

Options explained clearly

We'll talk you through the findings, recommended work and costs.

You approve the work

No additional repair work without your authorisation.

Can it be repaired, or does it need replacing?

It's a question we hear all the time. The answer depends on what the diagnostic checks reveal.

Three possible routes

  1. 1

    Targeted component repair

For isolated faults such as solenoids, valve bodies, sensors or mechatronic units.

  2. 2

    Gearbox rebuild or reconditioning

Where internal wear or damage calls for a strip-down and replacement of affected components.

  3. 3

    Gearbox replacement

Where repair or rebuilding isn't suitable or cost-effective for the vehicle.

In short

Service4Service diagnoses automatic gearbox faults before recommending a repair, explains your options and quotes before any work is authorised.

Questions about your car? Call 01483 397592 for a free phone diagnosis.

Can I get an idea of what's wrong over the phone?

Yes. Tell us the make and model, when the symptoms happen and whether any warning lights are showing. We can discuss possible causes and sensible next steps, but the fault cannot be confirmed without appropriate diagnostic checks.

How much does an automatic gearbox repair cost?

It depends on the vehicle, gearbox type and actual fault. A targeted component repair may cost less than a full rebuild or replacement. We'll explain the diagnostic process and provide a repair quote before you authorise work. Physical diagnostics may be chargeable.

Can you collect my car if it won't drive?

We can discuss collection or recovery options across the UK. Availability, eligibility and any applicable charges will be confirmed before arrangements are made.

Should I keep driving if my gearbox is jerking or slipping?

Don't ignore worsening symptoms. If the car loses drive, struggles to select gears, behaves unpredictably or shows a serious warning, stop safely and seek professional advice before driving further. Driving with a fault may cause additional damage.

Do you repair DSG, CVT and Powershift gearboxes?

Yes. We handle a range of automatic transmission systems, including DSG, CVT, Powershift, DCT and related mechatronic and control faults across major manufacturers.

Do I have to agree to a repair after diagnosis?

No. We'll explain the findings and proposed work, together with the quotation, so you can decide whether to go ahead. Any diagnostic or collection charges should be confirmed in advance.
