An MHEV, or mild hybrid, has only a small battery and motor that assist the engine, so it can never drive on electricity by itself and is never plugged in. The plug-in is more capable and more complex, and the mild hybrid is simpler and gives a smaller benefit.

The short version

The main differences come down to battery size, electric driving and charging.

PHEV: large battery, plug-in charging, meaningful electric-only range, usually heavier and more complex

MHEV: small battery, no plugging in, no electric-only driving, close to a normal petrol or diesel car

How each one drives

A plug-in hybrid can pull away silently on electric power and stay on it for short trips if you have charged it. The engine joins in when the battery runs low or you ask for more power. The handover can sometimes be felt, and when it is rough it is worth checking.

A mild hybrid feels like a normal engine car. The motor smooths stop-start and adds a little help under acceleration, and you may notice the engine switching off as you coast. You will not drive in silence under electric power.

What each means for the gearbox

Plug-in hybrids use a range of transmissions, from conventional automatics and dual-clutch gearboxes with a built-in motor to power-split e-CVTs. Because the motor and engine work together through the gearbox, problems can come from the gearbox or from the hybrid controls. See our guide to hybrid gearbox problems.

Mild hybrids usually have an ordinary manual, automatic or dual-clutch gearbox, and it fails the same way as in a non-hybrid car. If a mild hybrid jerks or slips, the usual causes apply, as covered in our guides on automatic jerking and delayed Drive.

Running costs and complexity

Fuel: a well-charged PHEV can use very little fuel on short trips. A PHEV that is never charged can use more than an equivalent car. An MHEV saves a little fuel in most conditions.

Complexity: a PHEV has a high-voltage battery, motor and power electronics. An MHEV has a smaller 48 volt system and fewer parts.

Repairs: high-voltage work on a PHEV needs specially trained technicians, and gearbox problems can be harder to pin down.

Weight: a PHEV is noticeably heavier because of its battery.

Which should you choose?

Choose a PHEV if you can charge at home or work, do mainly short daily trips and want to use little or no fuel on them

Choose an MHEV if you cannot charge, do mixed or long journeys and want something close to a normal car with a small saving

Think twice about a PHEV if you will rarely plug it in

Our full explainers cover each in turn: what is a plug-in hybrid and what is a mild hybrid.

If you are buying used

Whichever you choose, test drive from cold, check the service history including gearbox fluid, and watch for jerking, hesitation or warning lights. Our guide to buying a used hybrid lists what to check.

A quick decision guide

If you are choosing between the two, a few honest questions help.

Can you charge at home or work? If not, a plug-in hybrid loses most of its advantage.

How far are your usual trips? Short daily trips suit a plug-in. Long motorway trips suit either.

Do you want to avoid complexity? A mild hybrid is simpler.

Do you tow? Check the towing limit of any hybrid before buying.

Will you keep the car out of warranty? Simpler cars are generally cheaper to repair.

What can go wrong with each

A plug-in hybrid has more systems to go wrong: the high-voltage battery, the motor, the power electronics and the charger, as well as the engine and gearbox. Faults in those systems need trained technicians. A mild hybrid has fewer extra parts, so faults are more likely to be ordinary engine or gearbox problems, with the added possibility of a failed 48 volt battery or motor-generator.

In both cases, a diagnostic that reads all the relevant control units is the sensible first step.

A note on real-world results

Quoted fuel economy for plug-in hybrids comes from tests that assume regular charging, and real life can be very different. If you rarely charge, you may get no better than a standard car and sometimes worse. For mild hybrids, the quoted figures are closer to normal petrol or diesel cars, and the real saving is modest. Whichever you choose, be honest about your habits, and check independent real-world reports for the model you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PHEV and MHEV?

A PHEV has a large battery you plug in and can drive on electricity. An MHEV has a small battery that assists the engine and cannot drive the car alone.

Is a mild hybrid better than a plug-in hybrid?

Neither is better for everyone. A plug-in suits owners who can charge, and a mild hybrid suits those who cannot or who want something simpler.

Do PHEVs and MHEVs have different gearboxes?

Often yes. Plug-ins tend to have a gearbox built around the motor, or an e-CVT. Mild hybrids usually have a conventional gearbox.

Which is cheaper to run, a PHEV or an MHEV?

A PHEV can be cheaper if you charge it regularly. If you rarely charge it, it may use more fuel than a mild hybrid.

Can both types suffer gearbox problems?

Yes. The faults depend on the gearbox type, and a diagnosis shows whether the cause is the gearbox, the hybrid system or software.

Can I switch from a mild hybrid to a plug-in later?

Not on the same car. They are different vehicles, so you would be choosing a different car.

Which is easier to repair?

A mild hybrid is usually simpler, because its gearbox and engine are conventional. A plug-in has more systems and may need hybrid-trained technicians.

Next steps

Hybrid jerking or showing a gearbox warning?
