Here is how to tell them apart from the driver’s seat, and what each one means for ownership.

Torque converter automatics: the smooth default

The traditional automatic, still fitted to most BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover, Toyota and many other models, uses a fluid coupling and planetary gearsets, explained in our plain English guide. From the seat it feels seamless: the car creeps at idle, pulls away with a soft surge, and changes gear with barely a ripple, especially in modern eight, nine and ten speed forms. Torque converter boxes tolerate towing and hard use well, and their characteristic faults are fluid related: lock up shudder, delayed engagement and slipping as the fluid and hydraulics age. Fed clean fluid, they routinely outlast the rest of the car.

Dual clutch gearboxes: the quick one

DSG, S tronic, PowerShift, EDC, DCT: different brand names for the same idea. Two clutches serve alternate gears, one handling first, third and fifth, the other second, fourth and sixth, so the next gear is pre selected and the change is a rapid handover between clutches. From the seat: gear changes are noticeably quick and crisp, the car may roll back slightly on hills, creep can feel less natural than a torque converter, and low speed manoeuvring sometimes has a faint judder or hesitation even when healthy. Dual clutch boxes reward enthusiastic driving and efficiency, and their characteristic faults are clutch wear, mechatronic unit problems and low speed judder. Fluid and filter servicing on schedule is not optional on these; it is the difference between a long life and a short one.

CVT: the rev holder

A CVT, fitted to many Nissan, Honda, Toyota hybrid and Subaru models, has no fixed gears at all. A steel belt or chain runs between two variable pulleys, giving an infinite spread of ratios. From the seat it is unmistakable: accelerate hard and the revs rise and hold at a constant level while speed catches up, with no perceptible gear changes ever. Driven gently a CVT is exceptionally smooth and efficient. Its characteristic faults are belt and pulley wear, shudder, and whining, and it is the least tolerant of all three types to old or incorrect fluid, since the belt’s grip on the pulleys depends entirely on the fluid’s friction properties. Toyota’s hybrid e-CVT is a different design again, using motors and a planetary set rather than a belt, and is notably more robust.

Which do you have, and why it matters

The handbook or a registration lookup settles it, but the driving clues usually suffice: seamless surging changes mean torque converter, rapid crisp shifts with occasional low speed hesitancy mean dual clutch, held revs with no shifts at all mean CVT. It matters because the same symptom means different things on each. Judder points at the converter clutch on one, the clutch packs on another, the belt on the third. Service schedules differ, fluids are absolutely not interchangeable, and repair decisions follow different logic. It is also why a genuine gearbox specialist asks what gearbox you have before predicting anything about the fault.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my car has a DSG or a normal automatic?

DSG and other dual clutch boxes shift noticeably quickly and can hesitate slightly at parking speeds. A torque converter automatic creeps naturally and changes seamlessly. The handbook or a VIN check confirms it.

What does a CVT feel like to drive?

Under acceleration the revs rise and hold steady while the car catches up, with no distinct gear changes. Gentle driving feels exceptionally smooth and stepless.

Which automatic gearbox type is most reliable?

Well maintained torque converter automatics have the strongest longevity record, with Toyota’s hybrid e-CVT close behind. Dual clutch and belt CVT boxes are dependable when serviced on schedule and less forgiving when neglected.

Do all three types use the same fluid?

No, and using the wrong one causes real damage. Each type, and often each gearbox model, requires a specific fluid whose friction properties the design depends on.

Whichever of the three sits in your car, we repair it. Call Service4Service on 0808 164 0418 or send an enquiry for honest advice and a fixed price quote with a 12 month guarantee.

Almost every automatic car in the UK uses one of three gearbox types: a torque converter automatic, a dual clutch gearbox such as a DSG, or a CVT.
