If your automatic will not go into Drive, the cause sits in one of four places: the fluid, the selector mechanism, the hydraulic system, or the forward clutch itself.<\/strong> Before calling a garage it is worth five minutes of checks, because a surprising number of no drive situations turn out to be a low fluid level, a shift lock issue or a selector fault rather than a failed gearbox. Here is how to narrow it down, and how to recognise the situations where the car genuinely should not be driven at all.<\/p>\n

First, define the fault precisely<\/h2>\n

These are three different problems that get described the same way. If the selector will not move out of Park, that is a shift lock or selector fault, covered in our post on a gearstick stuck in Park<\/a>. If the selector moves to D and the dash shows D but nothing happens when you press the throttle, drive is not being transmitted. And if D engages but only after a long pause, that is delayed engagement<\/a>, a related but distinct fault. The second case, D selected but no drive, is what this post covers.<\/p>\n

The five minute checks<\/h2>\n

Check the fluid if your car allows it. A gearbox that is significantly low, after a leak for example, loses forward drive because the pump cannot pick up enough fluid to build pressure. Look under the car for fresh red or brown fluid. Check whether reverse works: if reverse drives but D does not, the fault is specific to the forward circuit, which is diagnostically useful. Check the dash: warning lights, a flashing gear display or a gearbox message mean codes are stored and the diagnosis should start with a scan. And listen: a healthy engine revving freely with no drive at all in any gear, with the fluid level correct, points to a pump or converter fault and the car should not be driven further.<\/p>\n

What causes loss of Drive<\/h2>\n

Severely low fluid is the most common recoverable cause, and it always has its own cause, usually a leak that needs finding. The selector system is next: a stretched or detached cable, a faulty range sensor, or on newer cars an electronic shift module fault can mean the gearbox never receives the instruction, even though it is mechanically fine. These faults often show as the dash disagreeing with the lever position.<\/p>\n

Hydraulic faults follow: a worn pump that cannot build pressure, a stuck valve, or a failed seal on the forward clutch piston. And finally the forward clutch pack itself, which can wear to the point of no engagement, usually after a long period of slipping that went unaddressed. If the car spent months slipping<\/a> before losing drive, this is the likely end of that story.<\/p>\n

When not to drive or tow it<\/h2>\n

A car with no drive obviously is not going anywhere under its own power, but the caution extends to recovery. Many automatics should not be towed with the driven wheels on the ground, because the gearbox is not lubricated properly when the engine is off. Flatbed recovery is the safe default for any automatic with a suspected transmission fault. Tell the recovery operator it is an automatic gearbox issue and they will load it accordingly.<\/p>\n

What the diagnosis looks like<\/h2>\n

A specialist confirms fluid level and condition, reads codes, checks that the gearbox is receiving the correct selector signal, and measures line pressure. That sequence separates a cable or sensor fault from a hydraulic one, and a hydraulic fault from a worn clutch, without guesswork. Loss of drive sounds like the end of a gearbox, but a meaningful share of these cars leave the workshop with a leak repaired, a cable refitted or a sensor replaced. Why does my automatic rev but not move in Drive?<\/h3>\n

Either hydraulic pressure is not reaching the forward clutch, because of low fluid, a pump fault or a failed seal, or the clutch itself is worn out. Checking the fluid and whether reverse works narrows it down quickly.<\/p>\n

Can low fluid cause no drive?<\/h3>\n

Yes. A significantly low level stops the pump building the pressure that applies the forward clutch. Restoring the level after fixing the leak can restore drive if nothing was damaged in the meantime.<\/p>\n

Reverse works but Drive does not. What does that mean?<\/h3>\n

The fault is specific to the forward clutch or its hydraulic circuit rather than the whole gearbox, which is useful diagnostic information and sometimes a smaller repair than full loss of drive.<\/p>\n

Can I tow an automatic with no drive?<\/h3>\n
