In every type, the early symptoms are a change in how the car shifts, a new noise or a warning light. Acting early is the difference between a repair and a replacement.

Hyundai 7-speed DCT problems

The 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DCT) is one of the most reported Hyundai gearbox faults. It uses two dry clutches and has been fitted to models including the i30, Kona, Tucson and Veloster. Typical complaints are juddering or shuddering when pulling away, hesitation, jerky changes at low speed, overheating in heavy traffic and limp mode with a warning light. The usual causes are clutch wear, actuator and sensor faults, mechatronic or control unit problems and software. A software update can sometimes help, but it will not cure mechanical wear. See our guides to DCT gearbox problems in BMW, Mercedes and Hyundai cars, common DCT issues and mistakes that could ruin a dual-clutch transmission.

Hyundai 6 and 8-speed automatic problems

Torque-converter automatics used in models such as the Tucson, Santa Fe and i40 can show slipping, delayed engagement, harsh shifts and shudder. Typical causes are old fluid, valve body and solenoid wear, torque converter wear, leaks and control unit faults. A lack of acceleration after stopping, or the engine revving without the car picking up speed, should be checked promptly because it can be dangerous at junctions and at speed.

Hyundai CVT and iMT problems

Some newer Hyundais use a CVT, which can show whining, droning and judder. See common CVT gearbox problems. The iMT (intelligent manual transmission) is a manual gearbox with an automated clutch actuator, so clutch actuator and software faults are possible alongside the usual clutch wear.

Hyundai manual gearbox and clutch problems

On a manual Hyundai, the usual issues are a worn clutch, release bearing or hydraulics, worn synchromesh and noisy bearings. Grinding when changing gear or a slipping clutch should be checked early. See gearbox noises and what they mean.

Warning signs to watch for

Judder, hesitation or jerky gear changes, especially at low speed

Slipping, where the revs rise but the car does not accelerate

Lack of acceleration after stopping

A gearbox warning light, or limp mode

Whining, grinding or clunking

Fluid leaks or a burning smell. See burning smell from a gearbox

Our Hyundai gearbox repair page covers the models and gearbox types we repair, from the i10 and i20 to the Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona and Ioniq.

Not sure whether it is the gearbox, the clutch or the engine? Warning lights and limp mode can come from several places. We read the fault codes, check the fluid and road test the car, so you know what is wrong before you spend anything.

Make an enquiry or call 0808 164 0418.

Engine problems

Owners of some petrol Hyundais, including certain Sonata, Elantra, Tucson and Santa Fe models, have reported ticking or knocking noises, stalling, oil consumption and, in the worst cases, engine failure. Several large recalls and extended warranties in the US related to engine problems. If you hear a new engine noise or the oil level keeps dropping, have it checked promptly. An engine fault can also trigger limp mode, which can look like a gearbox fault.

ABS problems and recalls

Some older Hyundai models, including the Elantra, Sonata and Santa Fe Sport, were recalled in the US because water could damage the ABS module and create a fire risk. Most of those recalls applied to US-market cars, so they may not apply to UK vehicles. You can check whether any recall applies to your car using the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker. An ABS warning light should be checked as soon as possible.

Steering and suspension

Owners of some Sonata and Elantra models report wobbling or clicking sounds from the steering. These are often caused by worn track rod ends, bushes, ball joints or driveshaft joints. Left alone, they affect handling and tyre wear and can become a safety issue, so have any steering wobble or clicking checked.

Peeling paint

Hyundai fitted a self-healing paint finish to some older models. Owners of some 2006 to 2016 Santa Fe, Sonata and Elantra models report peeling or flaking paint. A bodywork specialist can advise on whether it can be repaired or needs refinishing, and early treatment stops it spreading.

Is it safe to drive a Hyundai with a gearbox fault?

Stop driving if the car is slipping, will not accelerate after stopping, is in limp mode with a warning light, is grinding, leaking fluid or smelling of burning. Continuing can turn a repairable fault into a damaged gearbox. A mild, occasional judder is less urgent, but it is a warning to check soon. If a repair looks significant, see when to repair or replace a gearbox.

How to look after your Hyundai

Service the engine and gearbox on schedule, and ask a specialist about gearbox fluid even if no interval is given.

Use the correct fluid specification. See what to do if you use the wrong gearbox oil.

On a DCT, avoid creeping in traffic on a slope or holding the car on the throttle.

Keep software updates up to date.

Check recalls for your vehicle on GOV.UK.

Get unusual noises and warning lights checked early.

Hyundai problems FAQs

What are the most common problems with Hyundais?

Gearbox faults, engine problems on some petrol models, ABS recalls on older cars, steering and suspension wear and peeling paint on some older models. Which one affects you depends on the model, engine and age.

What are the most common Hyundai gearbox problems?

On the 7-speed dry-clutch DCT, judder, hesitation, jerky low-speed shifts and limp mode. On the torque-converter automatics, slipping and delayed engagement. On manuals, clutch wear.

Do Hyundai Tucson gearboxes have problems?

Some Tucson models with the 7-speed DCT have been reported to judder, hesitate and slip. Torque-converter automatic versions can show slipping or delayed engagement. Any lack of acceleration after stopping should be checked promptly.

Can a Hyundai gearbox be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Faults such as clutches, actuators, solenoids, valve body wear, sensors, leaks and software issues can often be repaired if caught early. Widespread internal damage may point to a rebuild or replacement.

Will a software update fix my Hyundai DCT?

A software update can sometimes improve shift behaviour, but it will not cure mechanical wear such as worn clutches or failing actuators. A diagnosis shows which you have.

Why is my Hyundai in limp mode?

Limp mode is a protection mode triggered when the car detects a fault. It can come from the gearbox, engine, sensors or electronics, so the fault codes need reading to find the cause.

How do I check for Hyundai recalls in the UK?

Use the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker with your registration number. Many of the large Hyundai recalls reported online applied to US-market cars, so check your own vehicle.

Talk to a Hyundai gearbox specialist

Service4Service has 18 years’ experience diagnosing and repairing gearboxes, using OEM-approved parts and backed by a 12-month guarantee on qualifying repairs.
