The Vauxhall Insignia Is Halting Production – Here’s Why.

Manufacturers halt production on various models over the years and often for different reasons. Whether it’s changing trends in the industry, a lack of popularity with a particular model or even changing focus within the company itself. For Vauxhall, the time has come to say goodbye to the sale of the four-door Insignia here in the UK.

Vauxhall announced the halting of the production of the Insignia in a statement, stating:

“In like with UK market trends, and a focus on our move to electrification, Vauxhall has decided to close customer ordering for the Insignia model with immediate effect.”

The statement goes on to state that production of the Insignia will continue into Autumn to ensure that all existing orders are fulfilled before production is halted completely. The cause for this radical change appears to rest with the company’s movement to electric-only vehicles. The statement claimed that “New electrified models will enter the Vauxhall lineup in due course as we move to our commitment to be a solely electric brand from 2028.”.

Vauxhall isn’t the only brand axing popular models in order to make room for electric alternatives – the Ford Mondeo has also recently undergone the same treatment. The UK could soon see some of the country’s most popular petrol and diesel cars wiped from the new vehicle market in order to make room for new, improved electric models.

While there are currently no direct plans to replace the Insignia with an electric model, there is still every opportunity to do so and it hasn’t been completely crossed off of the potential future for Vauxhall. In fact, it has been suggested that the European Opel could be replaced in the future by an electric crossover alternative, with raised ride heights and other potential changes, though not a full SUV as you might expect.

This currently seems to only be in relation to the European Insignia and there are no promises that the new model would bear the same name or badge, however, it’s expected that it could cross over to the UK in coming years.

Currently, however, the axing of production of the standard Insignia only appears to affect the UK model, and the European Opel Insignia is still open for orders. If you are willing to import, now could be the best time to take the plunge.
